Driven amp as a stacking platform?

Postby DocRock » Tue Jun 12, 2007 1:45 pm

So, do any of you visualize an overdriven amp or the lead channel of an amp as a stacking platform? What I mean is, do you ever think of your amp's inherent distorted or overdriven tones as though THAT was the second pedal to make a stack?

Or do most of you use very clean or one-channel amps and have your pedals do all the dirt for you?

Some would stack two OD's or Distortions (i.e., Honeybee and Dyna Red) to get new textures. I want to know if any of you use, say, a Honeybee and then your amp's dirt (as if it were the Dyna Red)? If so, can you talk about some of the sounds and textures you've created?

yeah thats another option... I do use something like the Red Rooster Booster to push the amp over into compression and then drizzle on some distortion with a bit of LGWonder or Folk Fuzz is really good into a pushed amp....

Hi

Yes, at times though mostly I'd run pedals with a clean sound and then to get the option of also clean sound, but yes I would and then that would dictate the models I'd use with a distorted amp. Actually LGW often makes good sense to me then, though it depends on the sound and what I'd like pushed.

Have fun

Thanks for chiming in, guys!!! I thought that I should "stir the pot" a little bit the other day, as I hadn't seen any activity in a while. I felt this could be a fun & useful topic to discuss.

I now have what is to my ear the definitive guitar hero tone these days. I use the lead channel of my Guytron, set to about the gainlevel of say a JCM800. I put my BJF RRB on top of that, set to about 2:00. This, combined with my MP DBD in the FX Loop = :D 8)

I do exactly that -- I use the "crunch" channel on my Soldano, as well as the "clean" channel.

Between a few dirt boxes, and the two channels, and then stacking the various boxes -- I never get bored onstage 8)

I'll re-hash this topic. I use a '59 Gibson GA-16t a 2-6V6 tweed thing into a old Vox silver 12" with a Gibson. I play in a Top40 rock
cover band 3 nights a week and use the gibson cranked for my main OD sound and use the volume knob to clean it up. I use all my
pedals into a distorted amp. I have a LGW, DRD, FF3.5%, DBD. The DRD sounds great as it adds saturation for solos and just melts with the amp but stays very touch sensitive. the FolkFuzz sounds great in the bedroom, I haven't giged with it yet, (we took a month off) so not sure how it will work with my rig. I had a FRF, but it was a little too mid cut/muffish for me. The FF3.5% is more organic sounding so I'm hopefull! The LGW I usually use for either boosting for a bluesy sound or as a overdrive for when the volume on the guitar is turned down. Lots of great utility OD sound there. The DBD sounds great into a distorted amp too. I like this subject because alot of pedals are designed for clean fender BF type amps and very few are specialized for overdriven amps, I've been through alot of stuff and the BJFE stuff seems to work the best. I do need a great EQ, graphic prefered, to put first in the chain and use to EQ and cut the volume for my clean sound. I could control it beter with a EQ rather than just the volume control and make a really nice clean sound. Any sugesstions? Thanks- John
