What are your favorite VCF / Snow White Auto Wah settings?

Postby Eskimo_Joe » Thu Jun 26, 2008 9:03 pm

Anybody have any favorite settings they'd like to share?

I haven't fooled around with it enough to have favorites yet, but I'm running it like this....Sense @ 2 o'clock, Decay @ noon, Resonance @ 4 o'clock, and Bias at 11 o'clock....throaty yet articulate...very responsive....sounds great with dirt.....seering lead tone....can be both funky and somewhat haunting depending on phrasing.

Oh yeah, couple more questions....

Does anyone know of any good examples of where an auto wah has been used in a song?

What bands/players use them?

well lots of favorite settings on this one,,,I thinks it versitilty will be initially underated as ive never had as many different usable sounds out of an auto wah type pedal.
right now Im going with s2 r3 d7 b3 setting used with humbuckers. kinda funky feeling.
I like to change the res and bias around for non typical auto wah sounds, really nice use with jazz setup,I usually control the sensitive with vol on guitar and leave it set on the pedal,,,depednding on pick up arrangment. a very sensitive pedal to input, I think user setting will vary quite a bit.
some good examples might be Stevie Wonder Superstition era and J.Garcia /GD on Estimated Prophet, is tasteful use of the auto wah,,,both mutron users back in the day.

each time I switch guitars I put them all back to noon and start doing t he tweek dance

Yes this thing is almost a separate instrument as cabo said its really versatile and there are endless niche to be explored......

funny you mentioned 'Estimated Prophet' - Ive been corresponding with Mark Karan (Rat Dog) on this very subject and on getting the most out of the VCF ....

One thing that has come up is the difference in response below and above the 12th fret......

and one key is using the volume knob to adjust the input level to the filter so it gets an optimum level to trigger.....

So as you are tweeking the knobs, also try rolling your guitar volume (and even tone ) knob, even from 10 down to 9 to see what differences there are

Ive had a bjf vcf for 4 or 5 years and I still find nuances in the various settings .......

your not going to figure this pedal out completely in 30 minutes is all Im saying 8)

so is Mark Karan currently using a VCF? Est. Proph. is such a inspiring tune :D

theres also alot of synth like possibilities when combining the vcf with other modulations and drives,,making it even more endless
I always loved the VCF>TOP>BBOD stack,,maybe with a touch of DBD for good measure.

no (not yet) his big rig is wired for a Q tron there at 24v so it will take some surgery to switch , and hes still working with the VCF when hes on break at home, thats what I was talking about getting the response correct in the different areas of the fretboard......

I think he is planning on putting one on the bigrig and one on the portable fly in/ recording board etc..... also hes touring with Warren Haynes ( Mule is opening for them now and they open for ABB later) all summer so who knows who will be using what by the end of the summer.... 8)
