DRD & Vox-style amps?

Postby Joeleo » Tue Jan 25, 2011 10:45 pm

So a couple weeks ago i got an amazing deal on a Nolatone CL-30. I couldn't be happier with the amp, it sounds heavenly! BUT...I can't decide whether i like or hate the way the DRD works with it.

Before the Nolatone came into my life, my main amp was a silverface ultralinear twin. The DRD into the twin is my absolute favorite distortion sound i've ever achieved, but (not surprisingly) the character of the DRD is completely different through the Nolatone, and i'm just not sure how i feel about it.

What have your experiences been with the Dyna Red and Vox-flavored amps? Are there particular settings you recommend trying on the DRD?

Have you tried playing around with different voltages on the DRD through the new amp?

That's a good point. No i haven't tried any different voltages yet, just the standard 9-volts i usually use.

I had a DR Z Carmen Ghia with Celestion Blue and liked the Model H best as it was less gritty and had a better bottom end. I did end up selling the Z as it was just too fussy about everything!

Also, I think the DRD only goes up to 15 Volts, so be careful! Check the Library to be sure as it would be an expensive mistake!

Thanks for the tip! When you settled on the Model H with your Carmen Ghia (great amp btw) which other drives did you audition with it? I still haven't really checked out the Model H that much, so i don't have much of a frame of reference when people mention it.

UPDATE: I had somewhat of a breakthrough this weekend w/ the DRD into the Nolatone. Had a couple gigs, needed a big Marshall-y power chord sound for one song. I ended up turning the the drive on the DRD down to 10 O'Clock or so and driving the DRD with just a little bit of the Klon. The Klon seemed to fix the midrange issues i was having with the DRD into the Nolatone, and I ended up with a great sound for the part.

yup - also the SYODs are great at this as is the SBEQ and you can adjust the treble/ bass balance of the boost .....

also try swapping the order of the DRD and whatever.

I auditioned all the BJFEs listed below except for the MHT which I only got a week ago. I think I got a lemon Carmen Ghia and what got me POed was it was the first amp I bought brand new in 25 years, so I lost a load of cash on it! But, because I was short an amp my friend loaned me a Bludotone 4x10 Bassman and I took the cash from the Z and put a deposit on the Bludotone for myself. There is only 1 and my friend isnt selling. I hope to have it sometime this year!

One thing I did notice was the first preamp tube has a lot to do with whether the amp likes pedals or not. You might investigate what is in there now and try a different brand or two.
