Some AWF love

Postby Joeleo » Wed Apr 20, 2011 9:21 am

So I snagged an AWF a week or so ago (thanks again Mikepick!) and have had a few days to play around with it. I'm really loving it. It's got it's own thing going on but it seems to have a Muff-i-ness to it, which is awesome.

I've always had trouble with fuzzes. It seems like every fuzz I've ever tried either has great tone but can't quite be eq'd right or has useful eq but is not fuzzy enough/is too fizzy, etc. Most recently I had the Folk Fuzz Deluxe and the PPF. Both sounded really nice, just not quite what I was after. The FF was a little too bright no matter how i set it. The PPF, through my set-up, sounded harsh (Celestion Blues will do that to a pedal I guess...) and most of the time it sounded more like a distortion to me than a fuzz until I cranked the gain and put the nature fully-CCW, and then the resulting sound was heavier than I probably would have found use for...

But back to the AWF- it's great. In reading older threads about it, everyone seems to use the word 'sophisticated' to describe it. I can understand that word being used, but it's definitely a fuzz pedal. To my ears, it sounds like it started with something similar to a muff circuit and then was tuned to not get buried in the mix like muff's tend to. It does clean up really nicely, and seems to stack really well so far. Fuzz has become fun to use again! :pedallove

I love my PPF. Yes, it is unique and has some bizarre characteristics, but it can be stacked amazingly well. I am always impressed by how versatile of a fuzz it is. CAF tones are really not achievable, unless you push it real hard with another pedal. Even still, it probably will not be over-the-top. I am OK with that, though.

Favorite stacks with PPF: (both directions and usually including some PGC and SBEQ)
HBOD - PPF
Barbershop OD - PPF
OCD - PPF
Java Boost - PPF

How do you stack your fuzz?

I have yet to play through an AWF, but I imagine I would love that one too! Congrats!

Yeah, the PPF was definitely great, and the nature knob made it super versatile (I have to admit that it's probably more versatile than the AWF is), it just wasn't quite what I was looking for. It didn't really play very nicely with my main amp. The Nolatone is incredible, but it is ridiculously finicky about pedals.

I've been stacking the AWF a few different ways, all with great success. I've got it sandwiched in between the RRB and the PGC. Blowing it out with the boost in front makes it super over-the-top fuzzy, which is a nice sound to have. And having the PGC, HB, and SBEQ after it adds all sorts of ways to tame it. I am having so much fun with this all-BJFE/Bearfoot dirt rig. So many flavors, and I discover new sounds every day that I love.
