I've always had trouble with fuzzes. It seems like every fuzz I've ever tried either has great tone but can't quite be eq'd right or has useful eq but is not fuzzy enough/is too fizzy, etc.
Most recently I had the Folk Fuzz Deluxe and the PPF. Both sounded really nice, just not quite what I was after. The FF was a little too bright no matter how i set it. The PPF, through my set-up, sounded harsh (Celestion Blues will do that to a pedal I guess...) and most of the time it sounded more like a distortion to me than a fuzz until I cranked the gain and put the nature fully-CCW, and then the resulting sound was heavier than I probably would have found use for... But back to the AWF- it's great. In reading older threads about it, everyone seems to use the word 'sophisticated' to describe it. I can understand that word being used, but it's definitely a fuzz pedal. To my ears, it sounds like it started with something similar to a muff circuit and then was tuned to not get buried in the mix like muff's tend to. It does clean up really nicely, and seems to stack really well so far. Fuzz has become fun to use again!
