Hello, and a question re: MP pedals...

Hi all, first post here.

Been building and hacking pedals and circuits for a couple years, and have just discovered the Mad Professor stuff - picked up a Mighty Red Distortion - very nice. I like the mids on this pedal a lot. I'm happy to read on this forum that the BJFE/MP stuff is designed with the guitarists' amp in mind. Seems to be a very natural and commonsense but overlooked way of designing circuits.

I am interested in what would be recommended to suit the following - customised Telecaster with medium output humbuckers into a vintage Orange OR120 120watt head run slightly crunchy/dirty, into a 4x12 cab with Vintage 30's.

I am after the basic 3 stages of dirt for this amp/guitar rig -

1) open chord/barre chord rhythm crunch
2) higher gain solo/higher neck inversion sound that can be used also for heavy/higher gain rhythm
3) overall boost/mid frequency kick for more guts if needed.

(I'm breadboarding fuzzes to find what I like best - a journey in itself!)

Welcome aboard!

For #1 I definitely recommend the Sweet Honey. An amazing and versatile od that can take you from light OD to a thick rock crunch. The focus knob changes the feel of the pedal altogether..

For #2 - the first I would recommend for this is the MRD which you already have. Without boosting the input of your amp, I think this is the highest gain pedal from MP that can be used for high gain / rhythm sounds.

As far as overall boost, there is a new addition coming to the MP line any day now- the Ruby Red Booster. This will have a flat boost and treble boost option- basically the marriage of the BJFE Red Rooster and BJFE Little Red Trebler. Should be a great one!

bsic - thanks for the info mate. I'm building a clone of a Honeybee to see if I like it. If I do, I will most likely give it to our other guitarist and I'll spring for the Sweet Honey. The MP pedals seem to have a more modern edge to them that I dig.
I'm currently using a Soulsonic Fourbanger for my end of dirt boost, but wanted to see what else was out there MP wise for this position. Does the MP line have anything close to a Model H sound? Interested in some other alternatives in the higher gain area. I have a very early Catalinbread WIIO that sounds great through a smaller amp but at high volume just turns to mush for some reason through my Orange.

odog - yep breadboarding is when you prototype circuits in a temporary setting to try out schematics/fine tune circuit. Immensely fun. I've rehearsed with pedals in breadboard form just to see how they gel with the band - good times!

The Model H is incredibly unique- Ive not heard or seen an MP that comes close to matching its sound and response. They are truly amazing.

As far at the HB- first off dont judge it by a clone. Part selection is a big part and that isnt captured in a schematic... and can have a huge impact as you know as a DIY'er. A lot of DIY's claimed that the clones dont match thier HB- and those that ive seen buy them end up selling them very quickly since they dont compare. Just a heads up- dont evaluate the HB using a clone

Also- the HB doesnt sound like the SHOD- although they can be dialed fairly close, they dont overlap at all in my book. You did hit the nail on the head though-- SHOD has that edge and modern feel, while the HB has that tweed style sag and warmness.
