What cables are you guys using?

I've been considering investing in some better cables after reading on the lava man site and on TGP. Anybody invest in some good cables? What was the result?

i bought two of Pete Cornish's cables.

after being in the studio last year....the engineer gave me one of those cables to check out , and A-B ing with my own cable (a standard spectraflex) ,plugged straight into a vox AC30 , the sound just opened up, as if there was a blanket lifted. it was mind-boggling. great cables and a nice guy to deal with...Jimmy Page and Gilmour are just two names on his long list of clients:-)

but then in live situations, cables might be overrated? if you got a buffer in the effects chain and all...when it comes to bright backline amps, sometimes i prefer "cheap" cables, they take away some of the highs in the signal.

so-i'm happy bout the Cornish cables, but i use them in the studio and in "straight into the amp" situations mostly now. when i'm goin on the road, it's the spectraflex i've been using for years now.

cool! I saw some Pete Cornish cables in a shop not too long ago and thought about it. I've ended up ordering some Vovox cables. I'm anxious to try them out and see if there's a difference. What put me over the edge was reading the reviews of the cables I currently use --- they essentially described exactly what I don't like about my current tone.

I have been making my own cables the last 25 years or so, but I have a US made cable that I use every day- it's good because it feels nice and it's red so it's easy to find and it won't get stiff in cold weather( my RG-58 cables got really stiff in cold weather- RG 58 is an antenna cable btw) anyway I don't know that may other people that have a red guitar cabel so that's good on that account aswell.

I measured the capacitance in the red cable to 750pF at approximately a lenght of 6 meters.

These things can be compensated for.

This year however I got a Uni-Vox yellow spiral cable woohoo

Considering the rarety of those it's on display hooked into a Marshall full stack

I got a pretty good deal on some DiMarzio cables at a local shop so I went wall to wall in terms of my board and guitar cables. They sound better than my old cheap ones did but the DiMarzios are really stiff.

I'm sure you know this already but the Lava Cable site has everything you ever wanted to know about cables but were afraind to ask.

I think the advice you have recieved to this point is wise. Good grade cables are ALL probably okay especially for live performance. I'm sure you have at least one buffered pedal you can throw into the mix to keep the signal strength.

believe it or not the x2 plus wireless by line 6 with an upgraded cable to replace the cheap transmitter cable that comes with it (available from LavaMan or make your own) is one of the best overall I have ever tried.

And it is a wireless!

The unit eats batteries too fast though like 5 hours one is toast. The base is powered by your pedalboard. Money aside, just for the environment's sake I got four of the best rechargeable batteries and quick charge base I could find. total cost for the whole x2 rig, batteries and recharger, and the cable was under 400 bucks and it is WAY WAY better than any wireless rack unit I have tried costing thousands. And as I said, it is better than or equal to most high end cables.

I like a mix... I use some George Ls and old switchcraft and I do like my old yellow coily cord just for fun, but it also smooths t ings out a bit...... yes sometimes pure clarity is overrated ; ]

I dunno about that. You can always cut clarity with the tone knob on the guitar but you cannot get it back if it is not there in the first place.

off course...You got a point there!
but i don't know how to explain...sometimes "ordinary" cables just feel better to me....PLUS a lot of amps nowadays are too bright anyway IMO. just sold a suhr badger for that reason...

it reminds me of a story i hear very often (and i've been thru it myself): people tryin all kinds of expensive high end microphones to mike an amp live....and in the end its: going back to the good ole SM57

i even go further: in live situations the skills of the engineer or the sound of the room can make or break Your sound, regardless if You play a 600$ or a 5000$amp...so like bjorn said, the color of the cable could be more important sometimes than the sound. i remember one tour with another guitar player with a RI Twin (those seem to be everywhere,hehe) a Japanese strat and a Boss super overdrive and dammit, he was sounding much better than me with all my fancy stuff.
for Gilmour or the Edge it might be different, they got great engineers, i'm just talkin of a standard-workin-musicians-situation...

I use the Lava ELC from my guitar > pedalboard and pedalboard > amp, but my board is a mish-mash of lava kit cables and cheap crappy ones 'cause i still need another kit to finish it.

I would say there was a definite difference in tone once I upgraded to the ELCs, my pedalboard chain is so long though god only knows how much clarity I'm losing through that maze. i do have a couple nice buffers though, sounds fine to me.
