BJF Pedals + 4x12 speaker cabinets?

Postby DocRock » Fri Dec 05, 2008 10:56 am

My best buddy was over at a TGP'er's house last night to sell him a flanger pedal. While he was there, he noticed that this guy had many BJF pedals. He played through them, most notably the DRD by itself, the DRD stacked with PGC and SBEQ (1987 here we come!), and also the BBOD by itself. This guy was using a Hamer guitar with humbuckers, running into a Tone King Meteor II (set as a clean pedal platform) into a 4x12 speaker cabinet. What my buddy noticed was that this was the some of the best tone he had ever heard, and commented that this was certainly the best he had ever heard from any of the BJF pedals he had tried over the years.

He had been wondering whether Bjorn voices his pedals to work with specifically with 4x12's, or if that was just a coincidence because most things tend to sound bigger and better with that type of speaker configuration. I didn't really have an answer for him, though I do not believe Bjorn has a 4x12 in his workshop.

Anyway, just wondering if anybody on this board does the 4x12 thing and, if so, do you notice that it seems to sound best with this type of configuration (as compared with the 1x12, 2x12, and 4x10 configurations that most of us probably use)?

(Just curious ... I don't actually care how good it sounds ... I'm NEVER using a 4x12 again, not worth the trouble or the potential lumbar disc herniation.)

well, when Newark Mike is here this weekend and we go to George Scholz's mad amplifier workshop, I may talk George into letting me turn on his rig...of three hiwatt 100 stacks with 4x12s.....and run some BJF pedals into that, and make a quick video of that. George is VERY private, so he may not let me videotape or take pics....we'll see.

But we have to get Mike's 68 super restored and "blackfaced". Then maybe we get to play with some pedals. I am interested to see what George thinks of the BJF pedals. He is a very tough man to impress with anything.

I wish I could carry around 4x12s again myself, Doc.....I really do. My bass player brought his SVT with him at a gig this week, and i was reminded HOW GOOD a big speaker cab sounds

Hi,

Actually, I do have a couple of 4x12's at workshop and yes Ihave tried most of my models through at least one 4x12.

Indeed I would still carry such a cab when needed and only for the purpose of sound.

I would not carry the 4x12 EV loaded Kustom cabinett I once had ever again. I have a much lighter 4x12.

Through the years I have gotten used to different soundlevels as in the best time to practice alone could very well be in the dead of night in a flat trying out things to blast through 100W's the next day.
As this has been an everyday experience and I found I practiced, carried gear and waited more hours than I was on stage, in that order, I would also think that sound when practicing must be as inspiring as when playing live and this I also had as a core as a guitar instructor many years ago and in fact this I work with today.

Something I learnt is to recognize certain parts in sound that would maybe sound fine on low levels but that would mush out at rehearsal- this I learnt from designing pedals at night and getting the feedback during the day and so I use also small amps to test things and can from memory recognize what I'd like to get rid off or add as in if it sounds like this through this reference amplifier it would through main amplifier and speakers sound this or that way.

This is also why I am so interested in how things sound through amplifiers I may never get to hear in real life and pieces can be put together like a puzzle.

Oh yes I have heard some of my pedals sound like the worst possible through certain set ups and nowhere in the ballpark of the intention and I learn more why this could be and try to find ways of great sounds regardless.

I am as one project now checking out a sort of best of BJF pedal as it has been called-like if Baby Blue and Honey Bee had a kid as it also has been said and this model has so far been mostly tested on MP CS-40 with a 4x12 MP cabinett with four Red Fangs aswel as a small reference amplifier to chck that low levels and loud volumes correspond. I've got some more testing to do to see if I can find a way to make this work on other shop amps like a proreverb and a VOX AC-30 and yes I'll run it through my personal 4x12 cab too.

Indeed btw DRD was designed partly using a 4x12 ;)

Have fun

Hi,

Ah, no not right away. It does give this impression of sound on the CS -40 driving a 4X12 but I would like to know if this travels to typical backline amplifiers.
Maybe a tourbox with this could be good. However time is running out, I will have to lock the design shortly.

However a tourbox with this will surely happen.

I have at the shop a couple of amps and one test guy said he was not nearly as pleased with the sound through a blackface Pro Reverb.......I will listen to this myself and also through the other amps at the shop to see if there's anything I can squeeze into a control to make traveling easier.

Hm, this is also why I am interested in what would be typical backline amps.......

OK I'll also try this through a Marshall Valvestate just because ;)

Since this is intended for MP pedals I will have to be very sure on the design so it can be made just the same in large numbers.

Have fun

Ah, well I didn't realize you still had the 4x12's. For some reason I just thought that you had some smaller combos in the workshop. Glad to know that you still have the big boxes of doom at your disposal!

Hi Alex,

Wow, I'd be so happy just to have 1/4 of that 4x12!

By the way, can you daisy-chain those together? I'll bet that's pretty cool if you can.

I've never had a 4X12 setup before until now. I just picked up a Marsahll 1959SLP and 1960AHW cab. The Dyna Red Distortion and that set up is just fantastic. Because I do not own an attenuator yet I was playing this at less than 1, but the DYD made it feel like I was at 10 or 11 if your a Spinal Tap fan. As always, thank you Bjorn!

HOLY SWEET JESUS!!!

I tried my Dyna Red last nite into:

Marshall JCM 800 2204 50 watt head, 1986 year.

4x12 cab loaded with Celestion 75s.

i completely OBLITERATED the other guitarist tone, and he had this huge system, nice amp, nice rack, etc.

all i used was DRD and SBEQ. it was AMAZING.

marshall was set to almost clean, with hint of ragged edge......

the DRD just won my heart, again 8) 8) 8)
