Hi,
If the diodes are shorted they would silence the circuit but would not explain why battery gets hot.

Do you have any kind of measuring equipment?

A multi meter.

I might have found the problem with the battery. I wrapped the lead around the end of the board for testing purpose and didn't realize the edge of the ground is exposed there. I'll try again later as I'm at work now.

Found it!!! I had T1 and T2 in backwards. I used the shape on the PC to orient them and after Corksniffer straighten me out on the correct method I now have fuzz. Right now I have the leds out, I'll get them back in tomorrow. Thanks for the help!

yeah, the LEDs won't cause any problems even if they were both in backwards or facing the same direction. They only clip the signal when the toggle is in the middle position. If however there was a solder bridge between the pads, that would short out the signal.

If you only use a standard spdt too they aren't even relevant. You need to use a center-off spdt to access them.

How were your transistors mistakenly arrayed? Are the letters on top or on the side of their corresponding holes?? I'm having some problems, too.

There is a more complicated explanation but it might be easier to look at this picture and just orient your parts this way. Although there are 4 pads for two of the transistors, the one labeled 'B' for Base actually just stretches to two pads for easier fitting of different transistors.


The two transistors at the top right of the board have "outlines" on the board. They should fit in those outlines. The other two have E-B-C notation. If you take a 2n2219a and set it flat side down with the leads facing towards you, you will have the Collector (C) on the left, the Base (B) in the middle, and the Emitter (E) on the right. Put the transistors in that way and you should be back up and running.

Now a question about the on-off LED, I went to radio shack (I know) and the selection wasn't too great. I bought a 3.7v 20ma blue LED, what resistor should I use with it?
