Leasing gear???

Postby Eskimo_Joe » Tue Jun 10, 2008 3:49 pm

Has anyone ever thought of leasing gear? It seems like for a certain segment of musicians, their gear of choice is constantly evolving and changing. Whether it's buying a pedal and selling it 6 months later or doing the same with an amp, gear is always changing hands. Has anyone ever thought of leasing gear as an alternative to buying/selling?

Anyway, I wondered if anyone thinks this is plausible or if buying/selling is just plain better.

A while back when a Trainwreck amp came up for sale I was trying to figure out a way to afford it and short of robbing a bank, the only thing I could think of would be to rent it out to people that have more money than I do and let them effectively pay my payments for me until I had made enough. This assumes someone would want to rent it, but I'd guess people would love to have a Trainwreck on their next studio project. It also assumes they wouldn't treat it badly, but there may be ways to take precautions. Anyway, food for thought. What do you think?

Yea, a lot of recording places rent gear, but I've never really heard of leasing it. I suppose it'd be a good idea, although I don't know why someone would need gear for extended periods of time (and then not end up keeping it :D). I think on a very limited basis leasing could be plausible, but overall I think most people prefer to buy/own gear.

there is something like you describe online somewhere but I cant seem to find it..sorry. I came across it one day looking for vintage gear,,or some type of effect. They had alot of great stuff to rent. It may have been out of LA,,if you can find it,,it may give you some ideas on renting/ polocies that have worked for that type of business.
might as well check into it,,if you already own the overhead,,it maybe not be too hard to start up.

Yeah cabo I think its Andy Braeur or something like that....

leasing is just long term renting right ....

I had considered renting pedals out at one point

you might get some of the companies to give you peds just for the exposure....

almost like professional tourboxes
