hmm...I am split between my octron 2 and moogerfooger murf, although if I had to choose 1 it would probably be the Murf. It can be a bit of a challenge to tame rythmically (especially when trying to dial up the same setting for gigs), but the variety of sounds you can generate from the thing is enormous. Also, the mix control is great for having the effect eith lightly bounce over the top of what you are playing, or fully take over your playing.

I have a few that are can't do without kind of things(for the most part at least)

Cusack screamer
Boss dc-2
Boss dd-20
Line 6 verbzilla

Strobostomp as well if we're counting tuners. The only tuner pedal to ever make me happy.

Boss DSD-2, I use it for jamming on my own.

If I put in a 2 chord sample at the max delay time and then have it endlessly repeat it syncs up to beats of about 140 bpm (or 70) and then I can pick away with that as the accompaniment. It's limited, but ok for messing about. I might look into something with more delay time to give me a longer loop at some point.

Hands down, it's my Echoczar, no question... I jumped on the Toneczar bus early for serial #6, & got it 6 weeks later. It's made the trip back to Ed twice for upgrades. There are a few upgrades it doesen't have, but It's staying home for now. No need for me to extend the wait for folks who've already been waiting a really long time.
Besides, whenever it was gone, I felt truly naked without it! It's a huge part of "my" sound now.
I've only found one thing that could truly improve upon it in any way: An EP-Pre from Clinch FX in front of it... Now we're talkin... Of course the EP-Pre improves everything on my board, no joke!

I have learned a lot from other people's posts on this thread, something like great minds thinking alike!

Anyway, for me it would have to be:
Fuzz: Though my Wattson SuperFuzz and Mayo are both VERY cool, I'd have to say DAM MKII.
Modulation: Moogerfooger 12-Stage Phaser
Distortion: DAM Sonic Titan
Wah: King Vox
Octave: Ampeg Scrambler
