probably the thing that improved my playing the most was really learning how to play bass..... not the way most guitar players do, but actually learning to think like a bassist - and after the labotomy scar heals it really opened up my guitar playing and my ears as well......... just like when I was learning the guitar as a kid something that really upped my group playing was playing the drums and also percussion in School bands .....

being able to hear a whole band and understand whats going on is another angle to your music Education...

I started out (thinking I could) play(ing) guitar and then, due to "band dynamics", played bass for several years before stepping back into a guitarist role. Gives one a whole different perspective. I am a better player for it. The role of bass player was a valuable education for me. Still play bass when necessary or when the mood strikes. The other guitar player in my current garage band just bought a Gibson Ripper. He is now possessed with learning to play it. This bodes well for our garage band, me thinks.

yeah its funny how playing other intstruments changes your guitar perspective.....

I started out playing trumpet, then guitar, then drums, then guitar again , then piano, then guitar again - took serious music theory, played in the guitar lab and was drummer for the advanced guitar lab - then my head exploded
