Sparkling Orange vs Sparkling Yellow

hey everybody...here is my thoughts on the SOOD & the Mystery Fuzz...

GEAR...Currently been using a Strat > Marshall 62 Offset Re-issue head > 4x12 w/ Celestion G-12-H 30's...

All Pedals played Individually, and not EQ'd or Compressed...

Mystery Fuzz....let me start off by saying i wouldn't change a thing!...Love this Pedal !!...to me it sounds like a Big Brother to a Folk Fuzz, Which I LOVE !!...it could get quite thick with the fuzz up CW, but their was enough treble in the tone knob to make it usable...i really like fuzz pedals, but i'm not a fan of heavy fuzz..i don't find them usable for me...i like medium- low gain fuzz boxes (an old Arbiter Fuzz Face is my Favorite still)...so, i found my favorite settings with V-4 , T-3 , F-9 ....and this pedal shines for me at these settings...very well balanced...nice tight low end with great ( no muddiness ) mid response ( that being Key ); with a sparkling high end....it has it all going on !!!....my guess is that we all just enjoyed a Snow White Fuzz ??....if so, i want one, Bad...

SOOD.......let me start out by saying that i love my SYOD...Great Clean OD sound and the best Pedal Pusher i have...it makes any pedal sound better...i had wrote in the SYOD reviews that it needed a little more low end...specifically the low E string...i don't know if that is possible, but that was my opinion....i didn't want to change anything about the pedals overall sound, just wanted a little more low E....ENTER the SOOD....a Great OD !!...fuller and fatter than the SYOD; but it lacks the sparkle and openess that makes the SYOD special in my opinion....by adding the extra low end some people asked for( not only myself ), it sounded like a blanket of bass was over the entire circuit, thus losing it's sparkle...don't get me wrong, it kills as an OD....i'd want one ( Donner can you hook me up ? )...it just is a different animal when compared to the original SYOD...the SOOD needed a hair more treble on the tone knob to compensate for the added bass to the circuit....i also found it did not stack as well as the SYOD with other pedals, even with the drive down...Mind you, the SOOD had lots of usable settings, one favorite being V- FCW , T-10/11 , D- 12 ....if i had to choose one or the other, i'd have to keep the SYOD...it is just such a great, versatile pedal for me...i still would like a little more Low E string , but i've got an EQ that works that problem out....

OK, the SOOD is on its way to its final stop with Eskimo Joe.....


BJ has agreed to a One time modding for the researchers ...


IF you would like your SYOD converted to SOOD specs you can send them to me and Ill send them all over together and then redistribute them after modding .....


So think about it and post your decision here either way......

Final thoughts regarding the SYOD and SOOD:

- the two differ enough to warrant separate production; most would probably agree the SOOD is a better or perhaps more versatile "stand alone" pedal while the SYOD is best suited for adding extra punch to another overdrive, distortion, or fuzz. Personally, I like it the SYOD the way it is and can find use for both stacking and stand alone. I don't play in a band so essentially I am "the mix". But, for those who are band members, I often think of the SYOD as adding that little something to "burn through the ground clutter", if I might use some old F-4 Phantom radar terminology in lieu of the more hackneyed "cut through the mix".

- this was a unique experience for me and I appreciate the opportunity. In retrospect, I wish I had tested and/or stacked the SOOD with a few other pedals but I basically only compared it straight up with the SYOD. In the future, I would do a little more stacking and comparison with some of my other overdrives/fuzzes.

- I think the process works very well. One real question is whether those who didn't get to sample the wares personally have a better idea of the difference in the two than they otherwise would have.

i would say from the reviews here it does seem that most everyone heard a noticeable difference,,I guess that would make it 2 different pedals and maybe worth offerning a 'tame' version of the SYOD.

I think people who didnt play either one would have a good idea of what they are getting into. r+d process seemed to work fine.

There have been several reviews so I'll make mine a bit shorter than normal.

First impressions --- I really like the SOOD. It definitely remedies that "too much treble" feedback about the SYOD. The Orange is very tasty in the tone category and to me, extremely similar to the Yellow. If they were brothers, they'd be the type that look and act a lot alike.

Testing details --- I played my USA thinline tele through a Victoria 35210 (fender super) and Victoria Reverberato. I played it loud, low and in between. Mainly I just fiddled with the knobs on both, as in I'd find a setting on the Orange I liked and then I'd set the Yellow's knobs the same way. I tried probably a dozen different combos. The tastiest one I found was volume 4 o'clock (almost wide open), treble wide open, drive completely off. Just by virtue of the volume, you get some really gnarly gritty dirty 70's tone -- maybe in the vein of The Faces (think Stay With Me as a reference point).

Post use impressions --- I think they are both fabulous. They aren't terribly different, but they are different enough for me to want access to both sounds. I don't think they are different enough to warrant two pedals, but what would be ideal would be to have a toggle switch or a knob or a foot switch that would give you access to either. I'd like to know if this is technically possible. If so, sign me up for that version. Otherwise, I'll hang onto the Yellow as is. I think people would like the Orange better, but having had the Yellow for many moons now, I've got a sentimental attachment to it (but not so much that I wouldn't part with it to have a "both" option).

Random thoughts

I like the orange color and the sparkle. Cool!

I love red (DRD, Model R, FRF, MRD, CAF, LRT, RRB) and green (PGC, EGDM, MGMV, LGW), but it's nice to be dazzled by some other colors too!
