Fuzz

After watching the "Fuzz" movie, I'm inspired to start shopping for the sound I hear in my head when I think of Fuzz. Of course I'll start with BJFE. Neither the CAF or the PPF are it. The PPF (which I like) is more in distortion territory while the CAF is a little on the extreme end of sounds. I have fun with the CAF, but I can't really use it in an every-day scenario. What lies between these two, fuzz-wise starting with BJFE but then branching out to say D*A*M and Pro Analog? I'd prefer an old-school sounding unit. Thanks!

as far as BJF fuzz,,,you might want to try the Folk fuzz or the new SWF. I feel they could fall between the spectrum of the CAF and PPF.
the MP FRF might be too modern of a fuzz.
there are many tonebender variations you could try as well from the companies you mentioned that have a nice old school sound too.
its hard to recommend a particular one as everyones taste in fuzz seems to vary even in vintage fuzz tones.
any comparison of what type of old school fuzz you like?

also I found a really nice 'normal' fuzztone on the CAF nature about 2 oclock with the fuzz rolled off to about 10 oclock...

Also you could try stcking either of t hose two into a Honey Bee or LGW or something to reign it in a bit.....

Thanks for the help! I've stacked it with everything I've got including HBOD, KOT, etc...I just like a pedal that I can use throughout its range. I don't set a pedal and leave it, I'm constantly changing to suit the weather. I figure I'm not doing the pedal justice if I can't use more than one or two settings out of it. I had the PPF dimed last night with a humbucker guitar and its getting close to the neighborhood. I just need more hair range and some vintage eq on it. I did experiment a lot yesterday with the CAF and a MDEQ and found some cool stuff, but I don't think the CAF is doing it for me. I'll just keep lookin' and listen'n. Thanks again!

hmm well for vintagy range the Folk and SWF would do nicely..... and for just sheer range covered the Fire Red Fuzz is amazing - all the way down its stays useful, Id suggest that when they hit stores....

If the PPF can get close to what you need when dimed and the CAF doesn't quite take up where the PPF leaves off, then just maybe the SWF would fill the void between the two for you. It's a raw tone, which sounds bigger than the PPF and is certainly useful throughout the entire range of the gain control. I haven't played the Folk Fuzz, but I'd be surprised if that was what you're describing as, from clips at least, it seems to have a little less gain than the PPF, albeit a looser and more retro gain.

Outside of BJF, I have to ask if you have tried the Foxrox Hot Silicon or either of Analog Man's Sun Face pedals? All three live somewhere between the PPF and the CAF, NKT is closest to it, then BC108 then the Foxrox. Of these, only the Hot Silicon has a very useful range of fuzz, the Analog Man pedals sound best either cranked or nearly cranked, the Foxrox sounds great across the dial.

You really should try the PPF at 18V. I've been running it that way for a year now and I LOVE it. I'm intereested in the FRF but I will probably go for the Pro Analog MKIII which folks are also raving about.

My PPF and CAF are permanent fixtures on my board.

Unfortunately, I don't have 18v capability. After listening to Analogman's and D*A*M's clips, I'm going to try to find a Drag'n'Fly and see what it does. The search begins...

A big vote for the KR Gypsy Fuzz. Really does the silicon Hendrix era very well

Hmmm might be fun to have a Fuzz tourbox - not just BJFs ---- could either be similar kinds or a range ....
