EGDM output issue...?

Postby brown90 » Sat Sep 15, 2012 8:13 am

Hey guys :) !

I just go my first 2 BJFe pedals, an HBOD and an EGDM that I bought last month from These Go To 11.

I'm very impressed by the sound of these 2 pedals and stacked together, it's magical....

BUT, I'm expecting some volume issue: I like the volume knob on my HBOD at noon. And to get the same volume on my EGDM, I have to set its volume knob almost at 3 or 4.

Has anyone experienced that ? I mean, it works and sounds fine, but the output volume is much lower than my HBOD...

Thank you so much for reading !

I my experience the EGDM is LOUD! Way louder than MH, DRD and HBOD that I had.

Yeah, agreed its known fact EGDM & EGDM4k have large amount of volume on tap. More than many of the other BJFe pedals, works great as a fat boost even.
I would say unity gain on the EGDM is very low on pot, like 8:00 or 9:00 going by clock face to be clear. Nothing has changed on the design because I just had a brand new one from Thesegoto11 too. The volume knob is almost hard to set at unity because it has so much range that each little movement increases it.
Sounds like something going on with it?
But it doesn't hurt to ask Bjorn or Don, just incase something did change with new ones? But doubt it.
Don is here in the US and could check it for u or send to Bjorn himself if needed. They will take care of you 100% these products are great & they stand behind them.
Good luck, let us know what u find out.....

Thank you very much to you 2 for your comment !

I don't have an amp these days, I only play thru my monitoring speakers. Could it be the reason why the unity gain is around 3 or 4 on my EGDM ?

The thing is, I have a DAM Meathead Fuzz, and while unity gain is around noon, it can get VERY loud, it's the same for my other fuzzes... But I can't get the EGDM to be loud, it's very soft...

I think I'll go to a rehearsal room next week to try it out.... ! :?

Yeah it's always good to check all your gear using with it to rule things out. Definitely use just the EGDM by itself try different cables of u haven't....
But being that your description of the Honey Bee volume sounds accurate it does sound like something's up. If it was your monitors then I would think u would need to turn HB volume much higher.
Sometimes if you push say an amp with pedal volume to boost at there's a point where instead of getting louder it will start to overdrive it and distort. But u are talking about unity gain and 3:00 is pretty far off from where unity normal is (on mine & others I've heard).
Someone was just saying how u can turn the gain down and volume up using voice to shape & get a wonderful boost pedal, very fat. The EGDM really seems to have quite a bit of volume on tap & in a good way. Actually I always felt Bjorn has a great understanding of volume section because driving amps harder with BJFe pedals volume has always produced nicer results for me personally than lots of others.
Glad u like each pedal & the combo stacking 2. Personal fav & many other forum members as well.
Don't want to over step my bounds and say there's an issue for sure (it's rare but things happen), but u really will be well taken care of. Congrats on the 2 pedals!

Hi,

EGDM was designed to partly be used as a booster like this

An old VOX AC-30 may have this glorious sound at about the first half hour you play it and it gives a sound that seems to have a reverb while it really doesn't technically- you also can take a chord that have the notes cling together like they would sing in a choir.
Now when you play a long gig and distort, to begin with it is fine to toggle EGDM on and off at unity level and distortion somewhere up there; but as amplifier gets warmer ( warm enough to melt the wax in the transformers) amp starts to compress more and you need to back off on distortion and increase volume on EGDM to instead use it as a booster and also adjust Voice control to lower some lows to maintain a playable sound.

Now it is advisable to turn off the VOX between sets to keep amp at best temperature

Anyway in order to make it possible to set sound like above and yes I have done rehearsals and gigs on old VOXes and just wished for something like this, the EGDM has quite a bit of output a lot more than most of my models but this is due to how it is meant to be used.

There are many other amplifiers where EGDM can successfully be used as a booster- more than a distortion.

Honey Bee on the other hand was not meant to be used this way and much of the dynamics would be squashed if used this not to say that HB does not work fine as an overdrive to distorted sounds because it was designed to do that too but then more via the way it is filtered than shere output power.

Bjorn- great description/info on the EGDM! Especially since it one of my most used gain pedals so it's cool to know its original intentions, and I would say I completely agree. & of course the HB has always been a favorite of mine as well. Not a surprise that so many people love them  :glasses :pedallove

Huh, I knew the old ac30's got hot enough to catch on fire occasionally but I did not know that they ever melted the wax in their own transformers! That's pretty crazy.

So, unfortunately, I haven't been able to go to a studio to try my EGDM with an amp.

BUT, I've tried once again with my monitoring speakers. The volume on my BJFe Honey Bee is at noon, but to get the same volume with my EGDM, I have to put it on maximum....!! And the EGDM at max isn't as loud as the Honey Bee at noon.... I don't understand. I've compared to all my other pedals and everything works fine, all my pedals work, the cables too etc... It's just the EGDM, I can't hear it all :? :?

Aren't all BJFE checked if they work properly before they are sent to These Go To 11...? I just got it last July, the last batch.... :(
