Favorite BJFE(s) to use with natural amp break up and why

Postby hawaii121 » Fri Apr 06, 2012 5:52 pm

For so long, I have been playing on amps where I did not care too much for the amp OD, or it did not get really good till 1 hour into a jam or gig and, at that point, I'm not in a position to tinker with it. Because of this, I have spent the last two years searching out ways to get more headroom and pedals that can stand on their own. Well, now I have a different amp and it's the first amp I have every owned that sounds down right smoking on the OD even at Bedroom levels. This has me wondering if some of the BJFE I have sold over the years, might now be totally dialed in on this amp.

So... for those of you that love the sound of your amp OD more or as much as your BJFE, what BJFE pedals have you tried that make it even better?

BBOD is still THE drive pedal in my books. For either making a clean amp a bit dirty or a slightly dirty amp a bit more driven, I love this one most.

I think the SHOD, HBOD, LGW, and Model G all do a great job at this. Oh, also the SYOD v2. I consider the on the lighter to medium side of Bjorn's dirt spectrum and all do a terrific job pushing the amp even further.

I take a different approach and use a really clean amp as a blank canvass. I then use my BJFE to create the overdriven amp sound. Finally I use a RRB to push it over the top, similar to what I am suggesting above.

Also an excellent choice. The beauty is each pedal has a slightly different take on the end product. I find the BBOD has a very unique sound I can't replicate with other pedals. It's pretty amazing in its own respect.

Interesting... a friend of mine has had my BBOD for the last few weeks so I haven't tried it with the new amp yet. I'm supposed to get it back on Monday. For some reason, I thought I had read that the BBOD was not friendly with an amp that was breaking up, but I trust your opinion and will give it a go.

Also, the Model G mention... yep, that was a really good one with amp OD, forgot about that.

This is pretty funny, my friend who is borrowing the BBOD said the exact same thing and it was driving him nuts because he fell in love hard with the BBOD.

It's funny about the BBOD... I think it often gets overlooked with some of the "new and shiny" BJFE. The BBOD had a killer run with 500+ units, and it still fetches top dollar when one pops up. There is a reason it stays on most pedal boards. It is like that favorite pair of blue jeans you just know will always feel right.

It's the only pedal I've regretted selling and I did so immediately. The PPF can get closer than anything I found but it's not quite the same.

So I bought myself another one.

Ok, my wife ran out with the baby and I managed to get about 15 minutes of annoy your neighbors time in...

I tried the MR on low gain with the OD channel - works very well for just what I was asking about. Fattened things up a little bit in a very complimentary way. Looking forward to trying out the BBOD again, I've been missing it since lending it out.
