Cheers for the Mint Green Mini

Postby Strat-o-lux » Mon Jan 23, 2012 11:47 am

My Mint Green Mini Vibe arrived a couple days ago. Haven't had time to do a side-by-side comparison with the old Mighty Green, but it sure sounds similar (as I'd expected, given Donner's assurance it was basically the same circuit). In any case, the comparison is irrelevant - the Mint Green simply sounds awesome. So happy to have one now that fits comfortably on the pedaltrain mini board. The Mighty Green stays on the big board. Life is wonderful.

As a trem/vibe fanatic (currently own and use two Magnatone amps, a Juke 1210, AC30 clone with trem/vibe channel, a Model 16 Leslie), I've long thought the MGMV one of Bjorn's most brilliant creations.

GOod to hear! I am also a Vibe fan and had a Mojo Vibe which I replaced with a Fulltone MDV-2 that sounded better to me. The wah housing is really functional once you get used to it, but it is really big!

I should have a Foxrox Aquavibe this week to compare to the Fulltone and the winner stays. I also want to try the Bearfoot Vibe with the slow speed mod as I really liked the BJFE MGMV I tried, but it went too fast to hit a lot of the classic sounds. I almost always use really slow settings with lots of depth.

I expect you'll be happy with the Aqua. I used to have a CC2. My only complaint was the vibe section was almost too tweakable and consequently I often gigged the more "plug-and-play" Mojo instead, for Hendrix-y stuff (laziness perhaps, on my part). Dave Fox designs and builds excellent stuff. The relatively inexpensive expression pedal he sells is a nice addition to the vibe or TZF .

I retired all my Univibe type pedals several years ago in favor of the MGMV, often stacked into the Hartman Flanger or Foxrox TZF, for Trower-esque or Hendrix Vibe sounds. Less "authentic" perhaps - but with the stacking, a range of depth and variety of color that I really dig.

I have never been a fan of any sort of modulation effect or what have you.. always been a dirt, fuzz, and wah type of player but the MGMV is a different story. Its so incredibly useful clean, dirty, or as a boost...

Wow, vibe into flanger... I gotta try that soon! Thanks for the tip! :salute

My usual signal chain for this sort of thing is MGMV>PPF>DRD>TZF. I find the treble control on the DRD critical for EQing the whole mess. I wouldn't use a flanger like the MXR 117 for this - too much, too artificial sounding. The Hartman is nice and subtle; the TZF is perfect (if you can get your hands on one).

If you think about it, there must be some Hendrix recordings with Univibe and post-recording flanging (I can't identify any specific tunes without going back and listening). Also, while I'm not aware that he ever combined them, Trower did switch to using a flanger for a while, at least two of his albums feature that rather than the more familiar Univibe sound. In any case, I believe Trower used some sort of boost or OD after the vibe in order to get that extra-heavy throb that's a significant aspect of his trademark sound on the classic older recordings; the MGMV being designed for pre-distortion placement puts it in that same realm, if used in this way.

... what really makes the whole thing 'float' for me is the MGMV before drives and a slight chorus to one side of two amps .....yummmmmmm

Have you tried the vibe into a germanium fuzz?

I posted the same question over at the TGP in a tourboxthread but haven´t gotten a reply.
I have a mkI fuzz wich do not play nice with my rotovibe so i´m looking around for options and this has caught my attention.
