I feel like I'm in the "typical" user camp here -- I run mine at 10:30 or so to get some full bottom end and sag. Every so often I'll also run it fully clockwise for a tighter brighter sound but more often than not it stays at 10:30

The EGDM trimmer is truly special. I probably could not use the pedal the same without it.
Another thing... it is difficult to get used to "open" pedals. Most drives are compressed to a point where the treble generally needs boosting to cut through mixes. When I first played Bjorn's stuff, I realized the compression was not there (intentionally, I presume). This attribute impressed me. I work often as a sound tech, and it is easier to deal with and mold a sound that has the "open" characteristic. You can cut what needs to be cut and boost what is lacking. What I have to remember is that there is not more treble in Bjorn's pedals; rather, there is more in all tonal spectrums (in comparison to other devices), so the tone must be shaped (if desired) accordingly.
As for certain production models being brighter/darker than others ... I know not. I have only owned/heard the ones I have in my possession.
::Aside:: It would be nice to share my BJF love with a SoCal'er or two.
