the original uses a TLC272cp. You can get them at mouser or banzai and many other places.

I don't know if the thread still exists but if I recall correctly, Donner wrote a while back about several chips that could be interchanged, one of which was the chip used in the Clay Jones overdrive.

I think he also provided information about where to buy them. Sorry I could not be of more help but the information is on this forum somewhere.

BELOW IS SOME OF THE INFORMATION FROM BJORN'S CORNER WITH REGARD TO THE CHIP INTERCHANGE FOR THE LGW AND THEIR AUTHORS:

Steve, they are easy to change; just plug and play, no problem. They are easy and cheap to get, too, via Mouser (or, no doubt, any number of such supply houses, but I've used and had good experiences with Mouser):

And they'll have anything/everything you might want to try, not just LF353s.

The LGW started out with LF 353, and later with a second option of TLC272 but as some extra chips were destroyed, LGW was supplied stock with TLC272.

There were two reasons for the option IC :
Firstly while LF 353 would be prefered for highest headroom, LF 353 also requires maintained voltage preferably not below 8V's and so a an option was sought to work down to lower voltages.

Slight complexity in distortion was also considered desirable and this the TLC 272 would provide.

After about 40 units the Value of the Body pot was changed to give smoother taper.

The MP LGW is made like the last revision of LGW and pe3rhaps the one I was most pleased with.

It is interesting that Donner likes the OPA2134. That would be interesting to try too... Once day I am going to get a few of these chips and put them into a LGW and and then maybe document the differences..

i had a BJFe LGW - don't know the serial # -- but it sounded SWEET, and reminded me of a REALLY good original ts808.


the MP LGW was darn close, but had the 272 chip in it, and i put the 353 in there and it was closer, my fave tube screamer style pedal.

but the BJFe version has a certain sweetness that i still miss - maybe it's all in my mind -- but i remember it sounding SO GOOD at gigs

Bobby, I don't know if it was in your mind. I felt the same way. At one point I purchased both to A/B side by side, and the BJFE version had something extra I couldn't quite put my finger on. Even with a "blind test" with friends, there was a little extra magic there... same chips and all. Definitely one of the best, most well-rounded dirt pedals in the line.

Last night I was using the LGW and Model R. Each brought slightly different takes to the songs, and both sounded incredible. I loved the big, thick, open rock sound the Model R created and was surprised the LGW hung around as well as it did. I set the gain level just under the Model R, and the LGW had a bit of articulation and complexity to it that fit perfectly with certain song parts.

If I were to create a sort range of how I use my dirt pedals, it would look something like this...

Model G (lighter gain, extreme articulation/complexity) - LGW (medium gain, medium articulation) - Model R (high gain, brute force)

I also use the 3BOD like most people use an HBOD or Klon, adding a clean thick layer, as well as a BBOD for that unique tone when nothing else seems to differentiate my playing in a live band setting.

Yeah my preference on the LGW chip depends on the rig its in .... I really like the OPA2134 for Strat > Plexi singing drive tones ....

in other settings like crunch rock I prefer the origianal for its clearer punchier feel --- and there are many inbetween ....

would also depend on what I was stacking with it and if I was using the LGW first or second....

the Model R is RRRRRRREALLY good, isn't it?

i think the first time i demoed and used it at gigs, i didn't not catch the vibe of the pedal, and was impressed, but not in love with it.

currently, i have been using one, and i REALLY get it now.....it's a fantastic MEDIUM gain distortion, and it's big and open sounding. VERY different than DRD, or anything else in the BJFe product line, except maybe the cliffhanger II, but much less gain.

it's a very interesting creature, this model Arrrrrrrr
