Model H oward?

Postby thesjkexperience » Sun Jun 19, 2011 2:58 am

I had an Ethos OD for a few weeks and sold it. Why? At it's best it sounded just like Model H v1 :pedallove It had a few more controls, but surprisingly not that useful, but may be when going direct. Running MHv1 at near full Drive and MHvT at low gain was far better sounding than the Ethos. Of course they cost more, but the dynamics just weren't there in the Ethos the way it is in the Model H.

So, if you are after the DUmble sound go for MH v1 and crank it! :drooling

Hmmm I can see this now that you mention it --- the H has the dynamics and headroom and slice of a Dumble - or maybe the other way around since the HiWatt came first  Howard would be proud Im sure....

I can only really compare it to the Ethos I had, but as soon as I plugged it in I said "that sounds like the Model H!". I did a side by side and it was pretty close. On single coils if you roll the tone control on the guitar back a bit it got even closer.

The only Dumble type amp I have played was Fugot's BLudotone 4x 6V6 and I was getting confused because all my amps have a very simple layout. Trying to balance the two volumes and the channel switching and the switches was too much fuss! Cool amp though, but I would need a good lesson on how to use it.

All I know is that I dig this pedal more and more every time I play it.. With the gain between 9 and 10 I'm getting those vintage sounds I been searching for... The output level on this guy is great too!

You got me thinking about something with the H - it has this mix of impact and openess that I know Ive heard before but hadnt put my finger on yet .....

you suggested the H was a great Dumble ish sound - better than the Ethos even, and Id agree in some settings ......

but even more so I was playing it this morning with my LP Special with the P90neck/Mini hum bridge and its very much in the Neil Young sound area ~ with the tweed deluxe into that monster Baldwin Eliminator - that breathing compressing and expanding ....

so on low drive theres the Hiwatt feel and as it goes past that theres some Howard and some Horse :glasses

I have been using my MH as an alternative to my CH2 as of late (not taking anything away from the wonder of the CH2). It is certainly an open unit. It loves to be pushed by treble boosting before and also stacks well as first in the chain.

I am very impressed with how you can dig into it and have it give and release... Feels and sounds like an amp. The MH with trimmers are additionally moldable, but there are ways to get around tuning it if yours is not trimmed.

What position does everyone prefer with single coils?

I hate to always bring in my KLON, but hey, it is what's on board at the moment. Setting the KLON pre-MH with a slight treble boost and with gain around 10 and volume a bit past unity turns the MH into a wild beast with my american and british voiced amps. It LOVES my AC30.

For MHv1 I keep the Volume around unity 9 - 10 o'clock, Drive between 9 and 11 though I occasionally crank it to get that Dumble tone and Tone starting at 2 o'clock and going anti-clockwise the louder my amp is. I tend to like it at 12 Volts.

For MHvT I put the trimmer about 12:30, Volume around unity 9 - 10 o'clock, Drive between 9 - 11, but it sounds great anywhere on the dial and Tone is around 2 o'clock for my T-Bone and about 12 - 1 for my Strats. I seem to prefer the MHvT at 9 Volts.

I have been messing around with the trimmer a bit to fine tune the pedal as I play at different volumes. Sometimes I run my Swart around 1.5 to 2 and just use pedals and other times I play at 11 and use pedals on lower Drive settings and use them for solo boosts or just different colors. I finally found a great use for my MP SHOD as a booster for my amps when the are half way up the volume knob or greater.
