Should the SBEQ replace my current EQ pedal?

So i got the EGDM yesterday and have played with it for a bit. So far it is great! It stacks so well with the honeybee; thanks Donner.

I have also tried it with other pedals and it sounds great. Tried it with a Mosferatu and it brightens it up nicely. The amount of gain is perfect. While using the honey with the egdm, i tried the ocd, as well as the cruncbox for some lead tones and amazing!

I still haven't played with the internal control though. I'll leave that for tomorrow.

Hopefully i'll have some time to make a short recording and post it.

Hi Jonathan,

Donner and others got me on to playing with the trim pot and it really was the key for me.
It really helps match the tonal nuance of the EDGM with the amp you are using it with.

I LOVE the EDGM as it's it can really get "THAT"sound for many Beatles and "Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers" sounds.
It can also be a hi-gain monster as Bill and Marty would both attest. (bsic and melodichaotic).
It's a pedal:
some love,
some find they can get close with other pedals,
some just don't bond with.

With time and patience....(like all BJF's),
there's some fairy dust in there.
I think it's the BEST rhythm pedal going,
and is made for a love affair with a strat.

So I finally got my hand on a SBEQ. It arrived several days ago, but it wasn’t until today that i had time to play with it. It is great! Very different than the Barb EQ, as it colors your tone more. The Barb EQ is somewhat transparent through my amp, specially when set in the Tweed mode (It gives you three settings: Tweed, Blackface, British). I set the SBEQ at the end of the chain and the Barb EQ right before it. I noticed that the SBEQ does a better job at smoothing the od’s. When I crancked the Barb EQ on the Tweed setting, and fed it to the SBEQ, it sounded vaguely like the HBOD and very similar to the Catalinbread Formula No.5. Very cool! What i have yet to try is to put the SBEQ before the Barb EQ. Hopefully i’ll have time to do it tomorrow.

One more things that i liked was how i could set my od’s at very high volume and drop the output a bit by lowering the volume on the SBEQ.

Thanks for all your comments. Donner and Donnel, thanks for encouraging me to try the EGDM and the SBEQ. For now i think i am sort of set, but i would not be surprised if i end up with another BJFE pedal in the near future.

Excellent Jonny - youve hit the heart of it ---- overdrive pedals are just that - stacked and manicured (and over driven) gainstages .... and the SBEQ is perfect for this --- as you noted it is aces at that last 5% of finishing an overdriven signal into being more musical....

It sounds alot like switching from Jensen to Celestion Greenback speakers - makes everything more pedal friendly ---- you notice it more on a bright rig ... if you are already playing thru Greenbacks you wont benefit as much

bit its so nice for me to have that change on a stomp.

the Barb EQ is more of a tone stack than an EQ (trust me there is a difference). I think the BBQ is a fine pedal if you need to emulate a Fender or Marshall type tone stack on an amp that only has a tone control.

I will say that you can't go wrong with an SBEQ, I had one and foolishly sold it because I already had two of my EQ's on my board and a nice boost to boot, the SBEQ makes a great secret sauce, add a bit of this, little bit less of that, add some kick and VIOLA. For me the SBEQ has the ability to say "I am now in your face" without being offensive.

So i have been playing more by combining these two pedals and have found that the best is to place the Barb EQ in the beginning of my chain. That way it allows me to get different amp tones from my basic 'one tone knob' amp.

The SBEQ shines at or near the end of my chain. I love the tweakability that both pedals provide. In part is a bummer though cause i was hoping to end up with one EQ. However, after reading a post started by jfromel about EQ, I learned that having two EQ’s is very helpful, among many other useful tricks.

Anyways, I am still working on my pedal board and deciding which pedals will be staying, as I have too many dirt boxes. And the two EQ’s have made this job easier.

My next step will be to use it with my acoustic guitar. I read somewhere that it works as a good pre-amp for acoistics.
