Whining noise on BJFE LGW FIXED! Thanks Bjorn & Donner

Hello,

First, Donner - thanks for letting me join the discussion!!!! Second - guys at "These go to 11" have offered to help me get this fixed, I just wanted to see if there was anything I could do before going without the pedal for a while.

When the gain is turned up past 2 o'clock and the pedal is in the "off" position, it makes a high pitched, low volume, whine come through the amp. If anyone knows some way I could tackle this on my own I sure would appreciate the advice/help.

The pedal does not have a serial number and says "LGW Special" inside the box. There is a drawing of a hand with thumbs up.

Not an expert, but I think if you can hear anything through the pedal when off, other than the guitar, the footswitch isnt working right. It could just need cleaner/lube or need to be replaced. My wah did that and Teese fixed it no charge, but I dont know if he fixed it or replaced it.

I am sure an expert will be here soon.

I do think that's a good place to start - the whine is directly linked to the gain knob. I'm guessing that I will have to send it in, because I don't want to go digging in the pedal and mess something else up. I tried changing the chips and no luck... Someone posted with the same problem about 2 years ago - I was hoping to find out what they learned.

If you don't mind me asking, what turned out to be the problem?

Bjorn gave me a quick fix that required soldering a wire between two poles on the footswitch. This connection shorts out the pedal when the switch is off - problem solved. I had asked Donner about the problem, he forwarded my question to Bjorn and Bjorn then emailed me directly in the most pleasant manner offering to help. I am simply amazed. On a side note, I don't know if this is case with all of the LGW, but mine has booth chips inside the pedal - one in foam and one installed. I ran the pedal at 18v tonight (with the chip starting w the LF353 and MAN this amazing pedal got even more dynamic - harmonics danced from the amp!

I want to try other chips as well, but am too afraid of taking the rubber band off the circuit board! Does anyone know if they put two in every pedal? I got mine used, but it is so clean it could have been sent to me as new and wouldnt have thought otherwise.

When I switched between the chips at lower voltage, I actually prefered the 272, but you can only run that up to 12v (please correct me if I'm wrong on that). At 18v - the 353 (can run up to 24v) - again is far and away cooler to my ears!

Regarding the chips in the pedal (I'll try to post a photo to show how they are sitting under the blanket), they are very easy to see by simply pulling back the neoprene. Again, I can't speak for pedals other than my own, but I am assuming, if they have both, you would be able to see it right away.

right the 353 was in the proto thru the first batches - the only real complaint was that at lower drive levels it could use some compression and easier break up of its own so the 272 was added as an option - and then became the current standard ...... but absolutely do try all the popular chip swaps as well as the not so popular ones ---- thats your best chance to find your exact preference .... and I hate tubescreamers on ten usually - but this one has a great full throated roar when its floored.... and its a great solo boost into the HB. still a keeper
