CS-40 TUBES

Postby Danny Boy » Fri Aug 21, 2009 3:52 am

It's time to get some new tubes for my CS-40!
I've heard some good stuff about TAD EL-34B or do you recomend something else?

Thanks!

I've no experience with the CS-40. But if you haven't tried them, JJ makes several EL34 variants worth checking out. Overall, I'd say JJ makes my favorite current production power tubes - very durable. I like the tone of their KT88, 6L6, 6V6. Haven't owned an EL34 amp in years, so I won't comment there beyond suggesting you might give them a try.

Just curious where on that spectrum (big clean-to-smooth breakup-to-...) do those bug bottles get you?

The 66s have t he sweetest cleans Ive ever had even better than the blackplate 6l6 I used for years in my BF super ..... they sound maybe closest to the top end you get at low volume with 6v6s, but with full bottom........mmmmmm

I just read this description and thought of this thread......

KT-66: These power tubes give you big, aggressive tonality to match their large physical size. KT-66 tubes provide hefty low end, gobs of take-charge high-midrange character, and a tight response. Clean tones are spacious and sweet, while overdriven sounds are downright corpulent (think Hendrix).

Corpulent indeed!!

That's an unsettling image. "Corpulent" brings to mind the grotesque fat Elvis in his last years, not the lithe Mr. Hendrix. Or perhaps the writer was thinking of Leslie West... now that's some corpulent tone!

i've been using KT66 tubes for years in my RI Marshall Offset Head and they ROCK!...that head really likes pedals too....especially BJF's....i feel the KT66's are far superior to 6L6's in tone and texture...my KT66 head compliments my EL34 head nicely !!!!....the KT66 is cleaner and the EL34 is dirtier...what else do you need ??....maybe a CS40 ???????

i remembered having this discussion earlier in the year with Harri,,some of what he mentioned about tubes and CS-40 that might be of interest

".... JJ KT77, little less compressed than the EL34, I see it as EL34 with little bit of 6L6 on them.

I also like JJ EL34, Mullard reissue EL34 or Svetlana EL34.

The KT66 is good if you find a great pair not all them sound good.."

Not sure I personally have a favorite ,but have adapted to the sound of the JJ 34s and Im really content.

Sorry for the delayed response Danny Boy, what did you end up liking??
