Alex, it seems like BOTH formats might be well received.

I think that most "gigging" guitarists are liking pedal format the best these days.

However, for the recording and studio guys, a rack preamp with more variability and controls would be great. And for those guitarists who can afford to have a full rack system on tour, there's still a few out there

I like the sounds I am hearing so far.....and the midrange controls are the most critical in determining the main "flavor" of the tone for guitarists. I asked BJ about midrange controls, and he said it would take a LOT of knobs to do it right 8)

for rack preamps, the two that i have liked best are the sansamp PSA-1 and the marshall JMP-1, have used both of those over the years for studio work and liked them. one is solid state, one is tube. but both sound pretty good when tweaked correctly.

Alex I think the mid control you described would be something many guitarists would like all by itself -

Maybe one thing could be a BJF sized 'Mid Master' pedal - Id buy it

and then a bigger tube version with treble and nip/tuck controls , maybe a buffered loop for delay/verb....

Let me get this one done first. A "Mid Master" in a small pedal could very well be next.

YES. We need more real tube driven preamp units that run on full voltage. Ever since I got my Stage Hog no solid state pedal has been able to compare... well, the closest was my Rebel Red Distortion.

I'm moving to a rack based setup so I vote Rack, but pedalboard would also be nice.

great idea, would love to see more tube driven pre. i would prefer a pedal format,,unless the size was kinda big,,then I would just prefer to have the rackmount, midi or no midi.

I asked BJ about midrange controls, and he said it would take a LOT of knobs to do it right

I had a 4 hour conversation with Bjorn on this very subject a few years back. I was focused on sculpting EQ in the mids, specifically sucking some mids out for more modern rock tones.
The Mid Suck pedal never went beyond the discussion stage, but I still think having precise control of mid frequencies would be a very powerful tool indeed.

It's doable but a mid cut needs to be accompanied by a flexible treble EQ. Just cutting the mids will easily upset total timbral balance, you will often want to compensate with slight treble shelving boost or cut depending whether you dump low or high mids. I think it's something suitable for its own topic. Could be an interesting discussion.

So, the promised LP clips. A little bit heavy on the low end IMO. Since these were recorded I have made some changes to the Bottom Nip&Tuck filter and to the mid cut. We'll record a new set of clips in the last week of June.

In the meantime, LP Studio into Schizoid Havoc version 0.5:
