Which BJFE to replace a Fulldrive 2 Mosfet?

Postby 5digits6strings » Sun Jun 07, 2009 3:35 pm

Hi there, guys. I never needed a light OD/boost until recently, as I was always playing in metal bands. However, since I started a new rock band, and picked up a Bad Cat Hot Cat 30, I realized how sweet a non-compressed clean boost or light overdrive can be. So, I guess that has me on the quest that so many people are on: the ultimate "clean" boost/light "transparent" overdrive. I've been using a powder blue Fulldrive 2 since I got the HC30, and just replaced it last week with a Mosfet Fulldrive 2.

I was curious though...which BJFE pedal would be the closest to the Fulldrive? I usually use it in the "Comp-cut" mode into my Hot Cat since it doesn't add any compression, however, on smaller or non-tube amps I like the flexibility and mild compression of the "flat mids" mode. I was thinking Sea Blue EQ, since it doesn't seem like it would add any compression, but is there any BJFE pedal that would give me Tube Screamer-esque tones as well, in the same box? Thanks!

this will likely be the little green wonder or the sweet honey OD.....i will have both with me when i come to see you

little green wonder is BJ's take on the tube screamer. you can also experiment with different opamp chips to get the exact sound you like, which is cool. my personal one has the LF 353 chip in it, which is the sound that i like best. you can get chips that are really quite open and less compressed sounding, or ones that are dirtier and more compressed.

best trick about the LGW is the "body" knob, it allows you to dial in the amount of midrange content or "hump" that tubescreamers have......on darker amps, i use "body" more to the right. on really bright amps, i dial it to the left, which adds more midrange content.

the honeybee does this as well, as you dial "nature" knob to the left, it increases the mid content.

Whadda guy! So, can either of these pedals be dialed in to have NO compression effect at all?

well, i think most OD type pedals are gonna have SOME sort of compression, even slight....i have used the LGW as a clean boost, and it can do that.

we will test them out after next week at the store, and run them into something nice.....you guys have such a great selection of amps.

and i am dangerously close to considering ordering a suhr.....john said he would make what i wanted, and i told him i would do it thru MAE 8)

you bring YOUR pedals, and i'll bring MINE, and we'll have a little pedal party in the boutique room. maybe we can get jeff and ken to check them out while i am there, i wanna talk ken into getting the MP pedal line at the store, so they will be available down here in south florida!

if you come over it will be overload, you will freak mike out. you see, there will be TWO mikes, both with BJFE, and then bobby d with a few BJFE, and there will be this COVERGENCE of pedals in the boutique amp room, and time and space would be transcended....

yeah, been talking to john suhr a little on TGP, and he's very open to doing whatever you want on a custom order. it's a WAYS in the future though, gotta deal with the amp situation first. and i gotta wait til NAMM to do that. because i might be ordering a very special amp at NAMM 8) 8) 8) the idea sounds wonderful, my ears want to hear it and my fingers want to feel it.......

if you wanna come over, bring your "small board" loaded with bjf and mp pedals, and you'll freak him out.

come to think of it, between us we have quite a few of the MP pedals, so we can demo them to the store. they ARE the only store in the area that would be a good fit for MP stuff.

call me, heading to key west tomorrow, if you come down i will see if gary let you sleep on his houseboat, it's cool. he's the local sound engineer, and has a new radio station KONK 1630 talk AM radio in key west. it's pretty funky....
and if you come down, bring some fresh dirt, a pedal or two, for me to play thru at the gig. something new something old something BLUE...hint. :D

well since I cant get to South FLA..... the actual question answered is all I have to offer

One of the features of the LGW is its headroom and lowered compression and distortion complexity and with the body control you can bring the bottom back up - so yes I think an LGW would quickly replace the FD2 comp cut setting....
and as Bobby uh Slim mentioned the SHOD may also find its way onto your board....

and the SBEQ is also definitly worth trying in that spot....

depends how much compression and drive you want from the amp and how much from the pedal - ( Is this a two 'channel stepped' rig or an 'everything always on' using your guitar volume control setup ??)

I'll chat with them about it. The problem is that most people (ahemmm) are flabbergasted by $300+ pedals, but I, along with many other well versed players, GET IT. A well made stomp box can transform your rig into something more complex, new, and interesting. As a test, I started pushing (hard) to get more Zvex pedals back in stock...and low and behold, they keep selling out! If I can get a preorder from you and a friend on a couple of Mad Professor pedals, that would most likely get them in the store. I'll preorder one for myself as well, you know, just to help the cause.

very nice......a store like MAE that sell $5000 guitars and $3000 amps.....those kind of customers are an easy sell for a $300 pedal. i know times are tough right now, so stores are being careful with money they spend on inventory.

but once you hear some more of the pedals, especially the tiny orange phaser, snow white auto wah, and all the dirt pedals...you will see/hear what i mean.

i got your nuber into my cellphone, and will call you from key west this week to schedule next week.

the SWEET HONEY has just landed, an hour before i have to leave, PERFECT TIMING.....yes 8)
