This gear market is amazing isn't it?

Postby Eskimo_Joe » Sat May 09, 2009 8:21 pm

Things that would have sold in minutes are now languishing in the classifieds. Amazing turn of events! It's a great time to be a buyer. I wish I needed gear more than I needed money. :-)

It's ridiculous isn't it?

I've kind of given up on selling and just moved onto trades. Unfortunately not all people want to do this so its hard to find what you want.

Yep, the sellers market is crazy. Honestly, though, it probably needed a correction. I think it's better for everyone if some of these prices come down a 2 or 3 hundy. :)

I know I've lost my shirt in the last few months, though.
Much smaller collection than the days of yore . . .

I agree, and that is exactly what is happening - the ability to sell a second hand item for a lot more than the new price was due to an over inflated market.
Nice while it lasted but we have to go back to reality at some point. :(

Although, as soon as the economy picks up again I believe it will return to the way it was. It's simple supply and demand. I'd say what's happening now is the exception rather than the rule.
Trades are a good way to go right now for sure.

right the rules of supply and demand havent changed - just the demand ....

we are in a unique time , and 'this too shall pass'

I was reading the other day that this is the first time alcohol consumption has gone down in a recession along with other entertainment and people even eating out and simple things they usually lean on when times get tough.....

like I find myself in need of a new house, and its a total buyers market and rates are as low as theyve been in memory so for me the dead market is a good thing,,,,,,,,

so Im just trying to enjoy my music gear for what it is , music gear - and hold off selling cheap on fear......

if I wasnt buying a house Id be loading up on cheap pedals 8)

Yes, it is demand that has been affected - severely. The critical part of demand is buyers having the means to buy, and many don't now.

Now the boutique pedal market is a strange one, it exists in a rarefied environment populated with buyers who appear to have spare cash.
If those buyers with actual cash are not spending it due to confidence or concern over the future, yes they will come back quickly
when things turn (they might even be starting to turn right now). However, the rest of the buyers who were spending using debt, they will
not come back until they have improved their own situation, ie got a better job. That could take a while.

For any economy, if you inflate prices using debt, those prices will fall, and fall hard. A 100% rise in house prices and other assets over about
the last 3 years, the money has to come from somewhere to pay those higher prices. It was debt. And yes, flippers made money, but on an
economy-wide view it was more like a game of "pass the debt bundle" over the last few years.
