do they still do that annual concert where they do the whole 24 hour long song cycle of Wagner's?

they still do that, but in another town, Bayreuth, 3 hrs south of Dresden. well, Wagner. i got mixed feelings bout the guy. seen a fair share of his operas, and theres some of the greatest music in there....the orchestra overture of "Lohengrin" is just not from this world..... on the other hand his anti-semitic statements. he couldnt foresee that it would be "misused" some decades later, but still it can't be denied that he wrote a nasty essay about jewish composers.
interesting: Charlie Chaplin has obviously felt the 2 sides of Wagner, and he used the aforementioned overture twice in "the great dictator": first time when Hinckel is playing with the inflatable globe, but ALSO in the ending sequence, when the world is freed from the dictator.

that's right, it's Bayreuth where they have the Wagner fest.

well, that's the extent of my expensive liberal arts education in music history. i am able to know all this sort of arcane knowledge.
