... not so much your note selection but your 'sound'

not sure if you can really separate the t wo....

I was lisening to some of my recordings and wondering 'where did that come from'

I know my attack is partly the BadCompany/AeroSmith blues rock I grew up playing and the dynamic bouncing and muting is from acoustic music I played alot along the way ~~~ that with the sound of crunchy fuzzy marshally grind is what I sound like these days........ but Ive gone thru many changes and Im sure will again......


what influences do you hear in your own playing ??

I'm kind of all over the map these days, but when I first started out I primarily tried to emulate SRV, Ian Moore, Bugs Henderson, and BB King. I've expanded a lot since then, but I think my base sound is still blues friendly, but in a more Marc Ford/Rich Robinson kind of way (or at least that's what I tell myself). Love Slash's Appetite tone for hard rock.

Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy page, Early Clapton. for Fuzz. (+SRV)

Joe Satriani...G+R...the Ventures... gee... I am all over the place...

If we're just talking about SOUND and not so much actual PLAYING STYLE (obviously, to the extent that these two things can be separated), I'd say:

Probably more, but that gives you an idea. Some of these guys also influenced my style as well as my tone. Basically guys with BIG sounds are the ones by whom I find myself to be the most inspired. I've been really heavy into Warren Haynes these past couple years. Wow.

being into alot of different styles it would be hard to narrow one down but the first sound that really stuck out to me was Santana,,he was playing a festival, maybe the Horde in early 90's with some other bands and was absolutely smokin. He ended up playing with Phish, and I remember thinking how similar the Trey/Santana tone and style was. kinda took a liking to phish after that. A good TS pedal and a Twin not such a bad thing in good hands.

I actually saw Santana again just 2 weeks ago and it was just pumpin the whole time. Still a great tone,,had a nice horny sound, I couldnt tell if it was a amp or a effect,, almost reminded me of some settings on the vcf. Nice intense 10 min+ jams like the old days.
Also Derek Trucks Band opened up and if your into slide guitar, which I am,,he a must see,,,he has an such a ripping sound and his upbringing couldnt have been more suited(yey Duane ). Very vocal qualities to all his licks. I think about that alot when I play.

Speaking of ABB, Warren is a monster on stage, vocally and guitar everytime. Govt Mule shows are still a must go,,very inspiring.
I remember when it was hard to go to a show where Warren didnt show up ,,, hes maybe the hardest touring guy out there.

Heheh yeah one of my favorite concerts was seeing Warren when he first joined ABB in the early 90s - not only did he kill , but Little Feat was the opener and Warren also played about half thier set covering Loweels slide stuff - he just kind of owned the place that night.....

Yep, that's what Warren does ... OWNS wherever he goes.

One of my absolute all-time faves for sure.

Todd Park Mohr of Big Head Todd and the Monsters. Weened me out of my Marshall's and humbuckers phase. Hello single coil snap and Fender amps. His tone is constantly evolving on the albums and from tour to tour. From amp farm stuff and Gibby Goldtones to a couple of pedals and a Blackface. Les Pauls to custom Benedicts. This guy brings the goods and has shaped my tone from many directions.

Ah well, the list would be long. Hmmm, I guess I'd have to go with the typical list of 60's heros but one guitarist that has stayed with me all these years is Jeff Beck. Both tasteful and edgy, the notes he picks are so well thought out they almost always make a lasting impression. You can't say that for many players. It's interesting watching clips of JB playing with other guitar greats, IMHO, he is always the guy who says the most and does it with great respect for musical space and the other players around him.
I also like that he uses his fingers more than a pick. You can get some great sounds that way.
