Yeah, mine is a 2007 R8 VOS ... and truly is the best guitar I've ever owned. I sold my McNaught to get it, which was something I didn't think I'd ever do.
My main beef with Gibson is their (lack of) quality control. My guitar is particularly exceptional. It's a fantastic piece of wood, and was put together on what was clearly a good day. Sadly, I've played many other CS Gibsons (many which cost way more than even the hefty price tag mine caught) that were just DOGS, plain and simple.
Bottom line, Eskimo Joe, is that if you find the right Les Paul, there will be nothing like it. But PLAY BEFORE YOU BUY. Mine actually came out of a Guitar Center, if you can believe that! But I even A/B'd it with other R8's of the same vintage original spec, made the same year in '07, etc. ... and the one I ended up buying was distinctly better, as in not even close.
So there is nothing in the world like a great Les Paul ... but you may have to put your time in and play a bunch before you find one that is truly great. My complaint is that, for the prices they command, they should ALL be truly great. Sadly, they are not.
Good luck!!!
