Selling some pedals to buy a Les Paul -- AM I CRAZY?

Hello everybody,

I am on the fence. I have been wanting a Les Paul my whole life and lately it's been getting to the point where I'm considering selling some of my pedals to help fund it. Am I crazy? Anyone else done this in the past? Did you regret it?

Thanks,

EJ

I did the same thing last year - well after being a Fender hoarder for years Ive always had a big spot for the Gibson side of things that I played when I was younger....

so I split the difference and got into Grecos from the late 70s/early 80s as the Gibson prices are more than I wanted to put into guitars...

and now I have 3 very nice vintage japanese Res Pauls  a deluxe and 2 standards .....

EJ,

Not a bad conundrum to be in actually.

Some of the pedals you have are pretty much one of a kinds, others come up from time to time on TGP and eBay as I'm sure you're aware.
So, my advice would be to sell some of the more common pedals that you don't use as much and that you have a reasonable substitute for in the short run and get the guitar you've wanted for so long. You can likely recoup your losses later if you just find something you miss so much you can't stand it.

A nice Paul is something most of us have sought since childhood. I had one about 30 years ago. Turned out the guy who sold it to me had stolen it. Long story short, it was confisctaed, I lost my money, and he did a little jail time. Make sure it isn't stolen!!

Ive sold a ton of pedals I thought I would own forever and pass on to my kids and have had no regrets.
It was all to fund gear(mostly guitars) that I would be using and not collecting. I found it very much worth it because I was actually using the stuff and it became much more rewarding.
So you might find more satisfaction with the guitar if you sell pedals you dont really use.
now I probably would get a second job before I sold my bjfs, but I have a feeling you might do the same. :)

No, you are not mad. If you are, then I'm mad because I just did exactly what you are contemplating!
I even had to pass on a Custom Shop Model H.

Admittedly I didn't sell any of my 3 BJF pedals, but the ones I did sell I would have preferred
to keep - Cusack TAW, MP MRD (will really miss this one) and a hand wired Eternity (also great pedal).
It will be worth it I hope, as I have purchased a 2001 R8. I've wanted a decent LP for a long time,
the previous two were good (70's Deluxe, Studio Lite) but I wanted a Standard preferably a reissue.

Good luck with the search!

Cheers

Yeah, mine is a 2007 R8 VOS ... and truly is the best guitar I've ever owned. I sold my McNaught to get it, which was something I didn't think I'd ever do.

My main beef with Gibson is their (lack of) quality control. My guitar is particularly exceptional. It's a fantastic piece of wood, and was put together on what was clearly a good day. Sadly, I've played many other CS Gibsons (many which cost way more than even the hefty price tag mine caught) that were just DOGS, plain and simple.

Bottom line, Eskimo Joe, is that if you find the right Les Paul, there will be nothing like it. But PLAY BEFORE YOU BUY. Mine actually came out of a Guitar Center, if you can believe that! But I even A/B'd it with other R8's of the same vintage original spec, made the same year in '07, etc. ... and the one I ended up buying was distinctly better, as in not even close.

So there is nothing in the world like a great Les Paul ... but you may have to put your time in and play a bunch before you find one that is truly great. My complaint is that, for the prices they command, they should ALL be truly great. Sadly, they are not.

Good luck!!!
