I'll toss out a recommendation for the new Black Crowes CD called "War Paint".

It is easily their best work since Amorica came out in 1995. The entire CD is solid from front to back. The songs are well-written and it's got tons of texture. There are not any uptempo rockers though. That's probably the biggest knock against it, but if you go into it with no expectations of hearing Sting Me part 2, you should be pretty happy with I think.

The music is very soulful, but with a edge. Someone of TGP described it as the album that bands like Wilco wish they could make. I think that's a very good description.

The new guitar player, Luther Dickinson, works out pretty well, although he is no Marc Ford. There's not a ton of devestating solos, it's most very tasteful lead and thick groove rhythm.

Warning: the sound clips on iTunes are probably the worst parts of the songs they could have picked. Perhaps there's a conspiracy against the Robinson brothers. :) Don't judge off of the clips.

I saw on your other music post that you like the White Stripes. If you don't already listen to the Black Keys, you should definitely check 'em out. It's another 2 person group, sort of like the Stripes with a bit of an almost Hendrix edge to them. 2 people who walk up on stage and are capable of just rocking your face off at any moment :) Album to get is Magic Potion. Their new album, Attack & Release, is coming out 4/1, can't wait!!! It has songs that they were writing for Ike Turner before he died, so I'm pretty interested to hear the vibe.

Next band to check out if you like 70's rock would be Year Long Disaster. So who would of thunk it....the Kinks' Dave Davies has a son Daniel Davies and he grows up to be a sick rock guitarist! Year Long Disaster's 1st and only album is self-titled and definitely worth checking out.

Another pretty cool rock band is Rose Hill Drive. They are a power trio of young heads from Colorado reminiscent of some of the other old school amazing power trios. They're not on the level of those legendary power trios, but they're still pretty young, so I wouldn't be surprised if they get there. They are good enough that Pete Townsend said he loves their sound and asked them to tour with the Who.

I pretty much am always searching for new and interesting music, so there's plenty more suggestions where those came from. That's a good start though :)

Many thanks nichcope! I will definitely check out Year Long Disaster and Rose Hill Drive! I have a few CDs by the Black Keys and you are right, they absolutely ROCK! I wish there were more bands that rock the way they do. Thanks for the tip about the new album coming out! Now, to Itunes!

Agree, we gotta get EJ (Matt) to the Tone Post.....

...was also wondering how you decide what songs you want to LEARN versus hear, or can you guys just play them ad lib without having to "break down" the music??

An awesome FREE place to find cool bands and to hear over 47,000 live shows is http://www.archive.org (click on Live Music Archive and then when you get to the next page click on Browse All Artists with Recordings in the Live Music Archive). You're not stealin either, this is all bands willing to share their live music with us common folk for free. You can either stream a show in the live music archive or download it. After filling up an entire external hard drive with live shows, I decided it would be best for me to just switch to listening to streaming sets :)

Here's a very very rockin show from that band Rose Hill Drive that you can either download or listen too streaming on the Archive...... http://www.archive.org/details/rhd2006-04-11.481.flac16

If any of you like world music, I was just listening to a killer set from Toubab Krewe, http://www.archive.org/details/tk2006-02-03.flac16. Someone in the comments of this show described their sound as, "Malian Afropop meets jamband." Very cool sound and I highly suggest if you're looking to hear some different sounds and find some cool new licks to add to your repertoire.

one of my favorites that not many have heard of is Garage a Trois. I feel its Charlie Hunters best super group. I would recommend any of their albums or live stuff,,,
check out the visual page for a quick example,,,also if you like hendrix check theres a If 6 was 9 jam video. http://www.garageatrois.com

Great links Nichope,,,made me think of some other Afrobeat Orchestras,,,,Antibalas tours a good bit and originators of Afrobeat,, Fela and Femi Kuti have some amazing pieces, well worth a listen even if your not into that type of music.

...another thig I like to do for inspiration is listen to some older music and really listen to how it was recorded and some of the strange tones that were used that may not be used today....

or something thats fun is try and listen to a favorite recording t hat you have memorized - but listen as if its the first time youve heard it old music new ears.......
