What kind of music do you listen to? ....play?

Postby Eskimo_Joe » Sat Mar 08, 2008 8:59 am

It struck me the other day that we don't talk much about music here so I thought it'd be fun to get something started.

LISTEN TO: In broad categories, I like so many different kinds. I think if it is good, it is good, whether it's George Jones or Jay'Z. :) My main passions though are Texas Country, old/classic blues, and rock. Some artists I love are:

Texas Country: Reckless Kelly, old Pat Green, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Robert Earl Keen, Cory Morrow

old/classic blues: Muddy, Wolf, Buddy, the Kings, Gatemouth, James Harman, Hollywood Fats, Kid Ramos, Bugs Henderson (check this guy out if you have not...American Music, Henderson & Jones, and Guitarzbazbdrumz are unreal), Albert Collins, Elmore, Luther Allison, Nick Curran, Eli Fletcher, etc etc

Rock: too many to list, but some constant favorites are the Stones, Black Crowes, Weezer, Pearl Jam, Jerry Lee Lewis, Guns N Roses, Chili Peppers, U2, ZZ Top, Creedence (Fogerty's new CD is off the hook!!!!). Newer ones are Jet, The Donnas, White Stripes, The Killers, etc.

LIKE TO PLAY: I've gone through phases, I started out playing alternative because that was the era, then somehow I went on a massive and unhealthy blues binge where all I played was blues basically, and for the last few yrs I've started delving into various forms of rock via the band I was in. Right now I'm learning Open G tuning so I can play more Stones and Crowes songs and it has been really fun. Now that I'm settled more in St. Louis, I'd like to start looking for a band again.

What about you guys?!

That sounds cool! Where all have you been with your work?

PS What are a few songs of those artists that you would recommend checking out? I know the more popular stuff by The Cure and The Clash, and Midnight Oil, but not so much about the other bands. Thanks!

Man, I listen just about anything.... except "country".... weird huh? I live in Nashville and I cannot, stomach, Country music. I find it repulsive, but I sure like to look at Shinia Twain ;)
yeah yeah yeah's first is great. anything by Mazzy Star, Miles Davis's Witches Brew gets played at least once a week, Doyle Broomhall, Mr. Bungle, David Bowie, Radio Head, etc.,I'm just an A to Z all over kind of guy. If it sounds good to me and I can get into the groove and hooks, I'll listen to it all the time. I'm old school, but I keep current as well :) .

My first guitar tone impressions have stuck with me for over thirty years now. Frank Marino, Wally Stocker, Ace Frehley, Steve Stevens, Tommy Bolin, David Gilmour, Jimi Page, Hendrix, Michael Schenker, Billy Duffy, and a few others, So my "tone" is an accume, a sum of all my core influences.
Humbucker'd guitar in a Marshall kinda guy with some toys in between.

nice, that all sounds very familiar except i mostly grew up playing through fenders and ampegs... but my influences tend to be all over the map though i never did really go in for all this post 70's blues stuff. did you ever listen to the Rain Parade? that was David Roback's deal before Mazzy Star, i used to love that band... still do and Mazzy Star for that matter.

t struck me the other day that we don't talk much about music here so I thought it'd be fun to get something started.

LISTEN TO: My musical tastes are fairly far ranging. Most of what I listen to could probably be categorized as rock.

Older stuff: I absolutely love the Who and Led Zeppelin. Allman Bros, Black Sabbath, CSN, Chicago, Hendrix, AC/DC, Stones, Pink Floyd, Queen

New Stuff: U2, Cake, Dandy Warhols, Nada Surf, Nirvana, Neutral Milk Hotel, Pearl Jam, Rage Against the Machine, Smashing Pumpkins, Supergrass, Stone Temple Pilots, Yo La Tengo, Weezer, White Stripes, Thermals, Sleater Kinney, Chili Peppers

Other stuff: Love old country ala Hank Williams and Johnny Cash (it's my WV roots, I guess). Classical floats my boat, too. And some opera (usually, the stuff toward the end of the 1800s).

LIKE TO PLAY: Anything and everything. From classic rock to off-the-wall modern noisy stuff. My favorite tones are probably something close to AC/DC in their golden era. Some of the first songs I ever tried to learn were by the Smashing Pumpkins. Recently, I've been playing lots of AC/DC, Pink Floyd, Who, and the Shins. Most of my originals tend to be of the modern pop-rock/indie rock variety.
Much smaller collection than the days of yore . . .

Stuff I enjoy listening to...I enjoy nearly all types of music, just as long as it can hold my interests. My favorites are in the realm of Alt.country/roots rock/Americana and Power pop. I enjoy a lot of the late 80's and 90's "Alternative rock" or stuff you would have seen on MTV late at night during the era...as well as the stuff that was good but over played at the time.

I enjoy punk whether it be The Ramones, Clash, or Black Flag...to...older Blink-182, and some of the stuff like that.

I enjoy some of the "indie-rock", being from Omaha...I see a lot of what's going on come through.

and ofcourse I like all of the classic staples....Beatles, Dylan...on down though the list :)

Lately I've been thoroughly enjoying rockabilly music...Setzer, Reverend Horton Heat, The living End (punk/rockabilly/alt rock). The guitarwork is crazy and the tones are great...which gives me a jones for the 6g6-b bassman sound

also, I haven't got any of the newer stuff, but I am/was a huge Hip-hop fan...I enjoyed the stuff off of Rawkus Records (97-00), Def Jux, alot of stuff on Mixed tapes(cds)...a lot of thanks goes to a buddy of mine getting me into hip-hop as well as skatboarding back in HS.

The stuff I play...I bounce back and forth between Alt.country and folk type stuff power pop and some punk and alt-rock stuff. I think it all has a common center..
