Anyone wind their own pickups?

I am looking into trying my hand at winding some pickups. The only thing I can not find is information on how to scatter wind. My guess is that is THE secret to making great pickups as much of the components are from the few suppliers out there.
It would be nice to at least make great Jazzmaster and Strat pickups and a great Tele bridge and P-90 would go a long way with the things I am building. I would also like to tie two Strat pickups together in a humbucker arrangement.
I have an electric 12 string build on the back burner and it would be fun to come up with something unique for that.
I did score a copy of a famous winder's book which is mostly about building a winder. I haven't had a chance to look at it yet to see what it will take to build a winder, but no way am I spending $300+ for something from stewmac.
