Almost done with my two pickup black Esquire

Postby thesjkexperience » Wed Jun 12, 2013 3:39 am

A little soldering and making the nut and she is ready! I'm still learning a lot and I feel my tone philosophy is working out! I had my first build over at Wildwood two weeks ago and they were shocked at how good it sounded!

The inspiration for this guitar was one of Leo's first photos of his production guitar featuring black paint and white single ply pickguard with a maple neck. Except mine has a truss rod and is 1.75" at the nut and that screwy Warmoth 10 to 16" radius fingerboard radius. It has as correct a pickup set as I could find in Klein Epic Broadcaster with the neck potted with lacquer. Oh yeah, white pine body and the finish is so thin you can see the two small knot holes.

Pics and report soon.

Sure! I have two one piece pine body blanks and three the correct thickness for Telemaster or Jazzmaster. I can also get one piece swamp ash in most any thickness down in Denver. I just got an amazing router off of Craig's list as well as the top of a router table. Once I get some legs I will be able to route bodies right from the template. I am trying to get some white limba blanks (aka Korina) so I can do a Fender Starcaster shape (the mid 70s version) semi-hollow with quilt maple tops.

I didnt get anything done today. :banghead The chemo is making me so tired! Maybe once I get the kids down I can at least get the tuners on and take a photo. I will do a youtube demo of some of my guitars (this is #4) though I only have an iPhone to record with.

I wasnt quick enough to grab the sunshine through the window, but this is what I have now. It is wired with a 5 way super switch so I get the 3 normal Tele tones with both volume and tone, both in series with V & T and bridge pickup wired directly to the output jack! It weighs 6.8 pounds note black neck plate.

Here is #3 all finished weighing in at 6.2 pounds and it sustains like crazy unplugged and more so plugged in. Note chrome neck plate.:

#2 now with maple neck at 7.6 pounds. It was too mushy with rosewood and sustains a lot better with maple.

and #1 at an even 7 pounds:

Next in line are 2 one piece swamp ash bodies in a Strat (bridge route can fit humbucker, Tele or Strat) and a Jazzmaster (scheduled to have a Jaguar middle pickup on separate circuit). The Strat will be the same orange as the #3 Tele and it is a toss up between Blue Sparkle and Sea Foam Green for the JM. Sea Foam Green is such a great surf color, but the blue sparkle is something Fender doesn't offer and the auto paint is ready to buff in a week and not 30 days like the reranch lacquer. The pickguard is set for a 4 or 5 way switch and the Jaguar will be controlled by the Rhythm circuit.

Badass!!! in response to the question about color choices, if you are sold on the pearl pickguard i'd say the blue sparkle, but seafoam green is my all-time favorite color with a normal mint or tortoise guard.
