Nice Pot!

Postby thesjkexperience » Tue Nov 06, 2012 12:26 am

Just a heads up to those of you that ride the volume knob or do wah-wah tones with your tone control. CTS has a new pot called the 450G and it is available in 250k, split and solid shaft! http://angela.com/cts450gsplitshaft250k ... trats.aspx

It seems a lot of people are realizing that new stock CTS pots are getting harder to turn by the year and are offering smooth/easy turning pots for huge bucks. Now you can outfit your whole guitar and still be able to afford that new or used Bjorn designed product! These are going in my LsL this weekend!

I just swapped out pickups in my PRS and the change was much more to my liking, BUT... it wasn't till I changed the tone cap and treble bleed that things went into the super "WOW" category.

I also picked up a CT volume pot (haven't put it in yet, doing this in stages to make sure I like each individual change). Here's a twist for you, the volume pot I picked up has an adjustable trim pot soldered on so you can "tune" the resistance to your liking - cool!

I got all this stuff from Acy's Lounge, he helped me pick the right values for everything based on what I described I was looking for. He was spot on for me and really helpful. He actually took the time to look up the values in my guitar and to get back to me with suggestions and wiring diagrams, really cool guy.

Scott, thanks for the heads up! I'm about to swap pots on a few of my guitars and will probably give these a try. I was first thinking about the RS Guitarworks Super Pot but those are quite pricey.

Donnel, I think I know about those pots. They look really cool! Have you tried using them on a tele? I'm worried that they are too big for the small controll cavity.

I dont think I have seen those pots yet Donnel, but I have seen some that have an adjustable treble kit so you do not have to try all kinds of cap & resistor combos to get a taper you like. http://www.guitarelectronics.com/c=pADp ... _controls/

I also noticed they have a pot on the linked page that can be used as high pass or low pass. It would be interesting to wire the neck and middle of a Strat with high pass and the bridge with low pass.

I'm kinda weird in that I usually use the old vintage cap values of .047, .05 or .1. I do have a Strat or two that I will use a .1 on the bridge and use a smaller .05 for the neck and middle. I know a lot of people confuse a pot being on 10 as out of the circuit, but unless you have a "no load" pot your signal is going through the cap! So typically a paper in oil will take just a bit of shine off the top while a SoZo mustard makes your sound more open and punchy.

Others claim capacitance is capacitance and only the value of the cap changes the sound while in use. Having sampled many different materials and measuring the exact value of each cap I will hang alligator clips on very short wire so I can test without having to open the guitar up and solder every time. Different materials will taper differently as well as varying degrees of clarity to color.

I have a few of the Sozo blue molded caps that I haven't tried which are supposed to be slightly darker than the mustard of a similar value. I should try those in the LsL when I change out pots. I cant get the wah-wha sound from the .05 that is currently installed and it doesn't have a wammy, so I need some trick in there!

Mr Hawaii, can you link the shop you purchased from? I can't find it on the net.

Gorgeous skys today and I finally got the neck for my second project Tele. But, I can not paint as my little genius need some help with science fair. :banghead

Good point it does add some size and I thought it might be tight in the PRS. You might be able to resolved the angle of the trim pot.

Link to Acy http://www.acys-lounge.de/ - I went through him for my pickups and then ordered the extras from him as well.

I have had the new pots installed for a week now and find them very nice! They are much easier to turn than regular CTS pots and just a bit easier to turn than the pots Fender uses on their expensive models. I also traded out the CTS pots in my LsL and the improvement amazing! I got knobs that are almost sharp enough to draw blood just so I could do volue swells and do wah tricks with the tone. Now I could use chrome plated Fender knobs and it would work out.

Very nice.

I'm six weeks in on my change which included the treble bleed, tone cap, and pickups. I've been too lazy to change the pot to the adjustable value one. Also, the new set up sounds so incredibly good, I don't feel any rush to swap the volume pot.

Not to drift too far from the OP, but the Haussel 59 pickups are simply incredible. I mean, I can't get over how good they sound in every position.
