Favorite Guitar Straps

Postby hawaii121 » Fri Sep 16, 2011 9:46 pm

I know we all love to discuss gear, 'specially the boutique stuff so I was wondering about premium guitar straps. How about favorite straps in 3 categories:

under $100
Between $100 -$200
$200+

I have a new guitar heading my way in a few weeks that will be my first REALLY nice guitar. I wanted to find a well made leather strap, classy over flashy, but soft old baseball glove kind of leather in a wide strap. Any suggestions?

My favorite guitar straps are definitely Couch Guitar Straps. I bought my first one about 4 months ago and have since purchased three more. I cannot recommend them enough. Very affordable as well.

for the $100 - $200 try http://www.brookwoodleather.com/ Bob is a great guy and the turn around was so fast it surprised me. I have had it two years or so and it looks perfect. He will build you pretty much anything, but the website has a few ideas to start from. Mine looks kinda like 24/36 of the Classic photos, but I ordered mine before the picture was up. I just asked for Celtic or Old Viking style and that is what he had.

On my LsL T-Bone which is under 7 pounds I use the cheap, black leather, vintage Fender strap. Down the road I am going to have Bob make a nicer strap since I need a longer strap for T-Style guitars.

I use a 2.5" black letter Fender strap with my Jazzmaster. It is 8 .05 pounds and with the larger body also needs a longer strap than I need for my Strats.

So, what is the fancy new guitar? Photo?

I've got a PRS Artist V in blue crab blue with a stoptail soon to be in my possession. Oddly, I never really connected with PRS guitars, no hate for them, but no real love for them either. That all started to change when my local gear pusher got me to try out one of the PRS guitars with the new pickups - wow - finally electronics that stand up to the rest of the guitar.

As far as the guitar that is waiting for me, it has only been played by me and the owner of the shop. He brought it out to show me (it had just arrived) and it was love/lust at first sight. Playing it is simply a dream it sings as well as any guitar I have ever played. The acoustic resonance of this guitar is simply jaw dropping. I strummed a chord and the entire guitar continued to vibrate for what seemed like almost 60 seconds. Once plugged in, it's lively and almost feels like it plays itself.

Anyhow, I smitten :love4 (in case you couldn't tell). I was holding out to buy an Anderson or something from DAG, but this guitar was something really special, even beyond any of the other high end PRS that he has at the shop. It's waiting for me at the shop while I purge a little gear. I don't want to sell any of my most cherished effects, so it's taking a little longer to move bigger items, but I should be picking up the guitar by the end of October. Meanwhile, I just go in and play it once in a while and try to contain my :drooling

My favorite strap so far is the Copper Peace Homerun Baseball Glove Guitar Strap. I stubbled upon it at a store in NYC. I wasn’t even looking for startups, but when i saw it and felt the softness of the leather, i decided to try it. Paid like $65 on the store (more expensive online). It is the right width for my shoulders and works great on my LsL Saticoy and PRS SC 250. It has a small puch for placing a few pics and they are easily accessible while playing.

I have $30 hemp strap from San Luis Obispo that I love. I is about as wide as an Ernie Ball strap, but SO comfortable.

I also have Levi's leather strap that I find comfortable.

I guess I did not know you could spend $200+ on a strap without crown jewels inlayed throughout.

Enjoy them, those of you who own them.

Cheers.

I have a bunch of straps Ive grabbed over the years ... a clear one, a sort of tiedie python, some good ole wide Gibson ones I used for Bass, a real red one like SRVs, favorite is still my first good wide thick light brown leather one from 1973 birthday present that matched my Frye boots of the time  Its got autographs from John Lee Hooker, Bo Diddley and John Prine.

"Made of actual baseball glove leather, which wears beautifully like a baseball glove would."

From the Copperpeace site - pretty cool and under $100.

EDIT:

Just spoke to Bob this morning from Brookwood Leather - what a cool guy! I'm going to have him put something together that should be really special and not too ridiculous price wise. For this thread, I had included the +$200 category purely out of curiosity. If we can discuss $30 guitar picks, I didn't think a $200+ guitar strap was too outlandish  . That said, I just saw a $17,000 Nik Huber inlaid with Black Pearl and Rubies! Holy Crap!

Bumping my own thread - for anyone curious - google "brookwood leather" and you can read about how much Bob puts into each strap. He's like the Bjorn of guitar straps. My NGD is right around the corner (probably mid next week the PRS AV should be coming home) and I can't wait to get the measurements to send out and get him started. I'm going to order a fixed length strap in black with brown leather backing (hopefully to match the mahogony on the body). Cool stuff!

I came into this thread to recommend Bob from Brookwood Leather. I am so happy to see I wasn't the first. He really is a nice guy! He donated a bunch of his straps to the music store I teach guitar at. He and I hang out and talk gear whenever he comes in to Triple R Guitar. I must say I wasn't expecting others here to know about him but I am very pleased that his name is out there. His straps are the quintessence of classy!
