Foreign Transaction Fees?

Postby Johnson » Sun Jun 26, 2011 7:28 pm

Hey guys,
Anyone ever get charged a "Foreign Transaction Fee" from their credit card company when sending payment in foreign currencies ie. swedish SEK? I recently made a relatively large purchase through paypal using my credit card that was in SEK, and a week later i get hit with a $40 dollar transaction fee from my credit card company. I called my credit card company, and after speaking with a nice man from India named Peggy who assured me that the fee was customary, and could not be waived...I got transferred to another associate who was kind enough to waive the fee for me...so no harm no foul I suppose? Have other people run into this sort of thing?

Nope but my purchases have all been via paypal. I'm assuming this was a straight purchase from thesegoto11 or something but I've always paid via paypal even when buying from them.... curious though sounds like another way credit card companies try to screw you... awesome.

I paid through paypal, but used my credit card to fund the purchase...probably just like you said, just another way for credit cards to sneak in extra fees :glasses

I have been hit with those fees before as well. I will have to look into having them removed next time.

and since they passd the law lowering what the card companies can charge for regular transactions, Id guess they will be looking to replace that lost revenue soon

There is good news in the US. The major banks are going to offer a service similar to Paypal gift option in which you can send a payment via email/phone number. It should create some competition in the marketplace and hopefully free up some of Paypal's monopoly.
