Anybody see the Alpha drama!

Postby hawaii121 » Fri Jun 24, 2011 12:37 am

I don't know if anybody saw these postings, but apparently a very popular OD pedal that was supposed to be made by hand has turned out to a modified $30 Chinese built pedal... I'm not saying I know anything about the facts or the people involved, but it has apparently turned into a law suit affair, and is a quite interesting drama.

Yup -- rebranded Joyo Ultimate Overdrive.

Here's one on ebay ($36.88+$8.50shipping=$45.38):

And the Alpha Drive ($168)

So that means a couple resistors, paint and knobs come out to... $122.62

Pretty good deal, huh?

AH yes, I forgot to add to my explaination that the joyo itself is a knockoff of a Fulltone OCD!

Looks like a big mess - the alpha was advertised as hand made in USA so even the fact that they are made in china smells of misleading at best. What a bummer that people do this kind of stuff.

:: well, he-he-he-hello there! my name is th-th-th-thaddeus hogarth and i'm a fraud ::

For a guy with some nice gear in his videos, ripping people off with a knock-off of a knock-off is pretty low. ALPHA DRIVE for LIFE!

People were pretty excited about that pedal too! I had an Ethos for about a week, but to me it sounded like Model Hv1 cranked! I :pedallove my MHv1 and MHvT, but I just dont seem to need the Dumble sound and I run the drive between 7 and 11 o'clock.

I changed out the speaker in my Swart AST PRO to one that is more balanced and a bit less efficient and I find myself cranking the amp and using just a Swart Atomic Boost or the Ruby Red. It makes my pedals sound not as good, but all the BJFE and MP pedals work well into my Swart on 11, but my old Cornish G-2 needs a really clean amp.

It will be interesting to see how everything sounds through my new to me Swart SST-30 modified to use 4x6L6. One half of it arrives today! What sucks is the other half isnt going to be here until Tuesday :protest
