What does everyone like?

Application specific?

I am currently using the Heil Sound PR-30 when live and the PR-30 with a SM81 for studio work. These are used for rock tones.

For cleaner stuff, I use the SM81 and an AKG 414.

That is interesting, I would have never thought of using an SM81 or another small diaphragm condenser on an amp. I'll have to try that sometime.

I do think it is very application specific. On my twin, my favorite combination was a 57 and a sennheiser 421. The 421 tends to sound a bit harsh on celestion blues, though, for when I mic up my nolatone I like a 57 and a ribbon mic (Cascade Fathead II w/ the Lundahl transformer). More guitar players need to know about the fatheads. You can get one with the special transformer for cheaper than a BJFE pedal, and they sound silky smooth.

If I had the cash, I would get a Royer r121 and use that as my main guitar mic. :drooling
