SYOD v1 a contender for Klon clean boost?

Hello fellow BJFE cravers...

I just had a visit from a silver horsy and wanted to see how some of my BJFE compare in the clean boost catagory. I'm at home and playing kind of loud (poor poor neighbors!) because I want to make sure it's not just a low volume thing, but... My ears are hearing a pretty close clean boost thing with the SYOD V1 to the Klon.

Can some of you others who own or have owned both pedals give this a try and put your feedback/thoughts? Simon... Bill... Cliff? Donner? Not sure who has them both.

It seems like the KLON has a little more db to the boost and is a really good sounding clean boost. I agree that it is VERY good at that aspect of things, but it seems like a really good use for the V1 could also be hitting in this territory.

Hi Donnel,
As my KLON PM indicated,
I've only had the KLON.
will always have the KLON etc.
I still think it's unique and it's own thing,
but you are right about needing the amp working at that break up point.
Bill Finnegan himself says if you're not playing at that point,
you need a smaller amp before you need a KLON.
I'll be wanting that new amp before any more dirt. :mailbox
Hope some of the other suggeted persons can discuss your contention.

Hey Donnel-

I think the SBEQ could do more of what the klon was good at-- just giving a shape and presence to the ton that fattens it up. The Klon is indeed unique and nothing quite gets there- but the SBEQ got very close. The SYODv1 was a little too searing in comparison with a lot more upper harmonics and more distortion.

Yeah, I would have to agree with Bill on that. SBEQ will get you closer...I would say even more so, a BPB minus the buffer for the clean boost.
It's been a while since I had a Klon, but I remember it well and as a clean
boost, it is near umatched.
With the gain up and treble nudged, it comes off more in the Marshall OD camp, but even with the SYOD V1 at minimum gain, there is a strong, more aggresive upper mid presence, and a lower mid cut(until you turn the gain up).
As a clean boost, V1 reminds me more of a better version of a Z Vex SHO.

laugh... I was warned I might stir up the pot by making this comparison...

I do agree that the KLON is incredibly good at this EQ thing. But I have to say... I find it very different from the SBEQ.

Also, I really find the SYOD V1 to be clean on the low end of the gain knob... hum... :wtf: :shifty:

So, here's my question, I have never tried the RRB or BPB - how do these compare?

I think those are flat EQ'd

I don't think it's an issue Donnel (re stirring the pot),
given the pedal/ rig thing is so "subjectively objective."
I tried and loved the SBEQ, then tried the KLON and found it better meets my needs.
(I'll be posting it FS if anyone is interested as well as my EGDM).
People are still raving about the El capistan as a delay, and for me the tone of the Rocket Ride FEOTM is superior/ preferable for me.
The SBEQ did a good job of cutting teble or adding bass depending upon the amp-other pedals etc. I find the KLON alows the amp to breathe better and for me boosts better across the spectrum.
I truly think it's a healthy and honest discussion and we all benefit from honest and open debate. That's what real BJF lovers are about.

I hope that all know my comment on stirring trouble was meant to be light hearted.

I do agree with Simon, the KLON brings an openness to the sound, kind of the way the BJFE PGC can. Part of the reason I kept the V1 over V2 was because of a perceived openness as well. I absolutely agree that the V1 does hit the upper end of the EQ more so than the KLON which seems to boost the whole range. Both extraordinary pedals - Bjorn got it right in a small box though :notworthy ...

Any thoughts on chain placement and BJFE interaction with the horsie?

I haven't tested these waters too much but here are my thoughts on the clean boost settings on the v1 vs. the mightly Klon

The two both offer great options for clean boost but I do think they are voiced differently. The SYODv1 has that BJFe sparkle that seems to lie within all the BJFe pedals I've tried. It fattens the mids slightly but really boosts the high end adding shimmer and sparkle. The Klon on the other hand seems to boost the broader spectrum of frequency with a little more focus on mids and lows than the SYODv1. These differences may vary depending on your ear, what you're boosting and how you have the two set however I think the biggest difference between the two is actually the compression. The SYODv1 is pretty open and uncompressed and doesn't really have the same feel as the Klon. The reason I'm drawn to the Klon as a boost is the compression and punchiness it gives to your tone - it's truly unmatched as a boost pedal (although I am much more familiar with OD's than boosts so I haven't tried everything out there). Anyway, I just think that the Klon is more compressed and has more of a clean crisp punchy feel to it where the SYODv1 has more sparkle and shimmer. Hope this helps :wave
