portable recorder question

Hello all,

I am just getting started on a PhD program (there goes my guitar time!) and I need to buy a solid digital recorder that is really good at recording music... um... I mean, lecture sessions :D

Anyhow, I'm looking for something that is under $200 that will serve both of my purposes. I was looking at the Tascam DR08 - or something in a similar range or is the zoom h4n worth the extra bucks? Any recommendations?

Thanks

Good lucK ! What are you researching? TO be honest, I just used my iphone :) Its amazing how well that thing can record sometimes. But we're lucky here, every lecture is automatically recorded for you.

i REALLY like the ZOOM Q3....it is basically the audio section from the H2, plus adds decent quality video, and it's ON SALE at most online gear shops for $199, a friend bought one yesterday and got the Q3, an 8GB card, a tripod, and a hard case for $199.

it does GREAT stereo audio, and can record AUDIO ONLY if you want. plus, it can do VIDEO

Donnel, if you have an I-pod or I-touch(I know, like who doesn't it seems), just pic this baby up:

You cannot beat the price. Turns it into a digital recorder that you can upload and save easily on the PC. Sound quality is excellent. Would serve your purpose incredibly well. I used it to record this audio demo(and it was LOUD in the studio):

Many thanks to all! I'm starting a program in educational psychology, probably focusing on video self modeling strategies (very cool stuff). I work with kids in schools who have behavior difficulties. I use a lot of assistive technologies and have taught guitar to a few (last student gave me a set of ACDC glasses as a thank you). I'll check out all the suggestions and I'm curious about the iphone thing.
