Got this guy today in a trade (no bjfe's were involved ), very cool fuzz from 67-68'
so far, it sounds to me a bit like a maestro fuzztone, but smoother, and it cleans up well with the guitar's volume knob.

Cheers! According to Tom Hughes book, the Sam Ash Fuzz Boxx is actually a re-branded Astrotone Fuzz (used by Tommy Bolin!). Current tweaked reissue available from Analogman.

Me too! Plus, that one has some serious visual mojo going on there. Love to hear it; it would be cool if you posted some sound clips, should you find time.

i'd love to get some clips up..i'm still working out how best to approach it.

Has anybody bought, heard, tried one? If so, any reports?

I've not had an opportunity to play one. Comments on another forum - from folks whose opinion I'd at least take seriously, if not necessarily agree with - were quite positive, as best I can recall. And Mike typically does do a nice job on his vintage fuzz clones.

The problem for me with vintage fuzzes and their clones is that most are ultimately kind of a one-trick device. I love many of them and want to try many others (like Analogman's Astrotone clone), but they mostly sit on the shelf while the PPF or FF goes on gigs. Still, difficult to exercise restraint if I have a few spare $$ to spend

Mikes Astro sound nice and vintagy as expected - those fuzzes have almost no sustain on there own - you really have to front end them with something else to get them to sing......

Yeah, I'm kind of UNimpressed with the Astrotone/ Sam Ash Fuzz Boxx(sorry Fuzzzzzzzz Boxxxxxx) for that very reason no sustain and weak tone knob. Had an original a while ago and it went out the door pretty quick. I mean there there too many cool vintage fuzzes/fuzz clones, new builds I have/had or tried that can get the mild to wild thing with a twist of your guitar knob, why would you want to settle for a half trick pony that needs a kick in the teeth or be sent into an already raging amp...unless your Tommy Bolin of course

exactly ---- it sounds great with a drive with mids in front of it like a DRD or a LGW ..... so does everything else
