MP FGC vs PGC!

Postby Radiosdead » Tue Jan 26, 2010 12:30 am

So I had been searching for a PGC for a bit and nothing popped up...I ended up with a FGC about a month ago, which replaced my Bi-Comp. Mainly wanted to replace the Bi-Comp because it killed my highend sparkle....of course I heard Bobby D's PGC demo *insert angry wife waiving a rolling pin in hand "curse Bobby D and his demos!"*. Needless to say, that even in the Youtube clip, it still maintained highend sparkle.

Well....I finally gots me a PGC on the way! I'm very excited to see which comp I stay with as I really do love the FGC now...

Any others play the 2 and have some viewpoints or expectations of what I'm about to hear?

Cheers!

PS: Just got an RRB and LOVE it! It's crazy how big the bass freqs remain! I wasn't expecting that...!

So whats the verdict? And what are your thoughts on the RRB now that you've had some time with it?

Well I'm going to say that I much much more prefer the PGC over the FGC. It is just so true that it completely sweetens your tone. I also found it to have much more headroom at 12v than the FGC, much more in my observation. Definitely "sparkles" which is 100% what I wanted in my comp. Having used a Bi-Comp, and loved it (Juicier was my fav side), I just couldn't stand how it cut my highs. I know...that's part of it being a Ross type comp. The Juicier didn't cut as much, made it fat actually. With the PGC, I can make it Fat or Sparkley...I could also pull off some of that with the FGC, but not to the same quality IMO. The sus mode was nice on the FGC, but having only one spot for a comp on my board leaves me staying with the PGC for my needs.

RRB...I did like the RRB...I was surprised how much my bottom gets boosted....that said, it's very enjoyable, but I feel I would be getting more use from the Sonic Titan on my board, which seemed to be a better boost for my uses (I set it for fairly low gain as my amp is on edge already)....The RRB did stack very beautifully with both the HB and the Model H. My EGDM is on it's way back to me, I loaned to a fellow forumite, so don't know how it stacks there. It even performed beautifully with HB, H, RRB. It has lots of output and retains it's clarity. It is also extremely dynamic and responsive to both pick attack and vol/tone fiddling. Sooo many shades from just the HB and RRB. Anyways my 2 cents thus far...

Thanks for the reply! Did you happen to try running the RRB into an already distorted amp? If so how did it turn out? That is the application that I will be trying my RRB out in.

I did do that...it's makes it HUGE...everything remained tight and nicely defined. Again, I find it to boost the bottom more than I imagined...to my ears anyways. Not at all in a bad or flubby way, just more than I had expected. It does stack very well with everything I threw at it.

..i do agree that the PGC is awesome, and #1 in my book, but this is a close 2nd....anyone here have experience with one of these Hot Wire FA-1's ?...WOW!...it doesn't have the warmth of a PGC but it is crystal clear and articulate, with a little of it's own sparkle on top....the low end cut works well between my EL34 and KT66 amp heads...with the EL34 head i leave it flat, and the KT66 head it is rather boomy on the low end and the cut switch takes that all away...they are hard to find but if you see one, grab it!..it will be worth it...

Hi,
Thank you for the good words gentlemen,

Ah, the FA-1. that's one Ken Fischer recommended. No I have no experience with the hotwire version nor did I try this model when it was made -I remember it well though and at the time when it came it was view mostly as a preamp for acoustic guitars ......

Yes that's a secet tonetool from the past.

Have fun

Yeah I remember those - almost grabbed one after talking to the guy that was doing them- I think he had an orange fuzz pedal to going or something....

Have you tried it next to the SBEQ ? It does have the warmth of the PGC

Just scored a PGC for $320, and have a FGC lined up for $225. I'm for sure getting the PGC, but if I get both, I'll try and do a video.
