Wait that's my song...........

The most relevant current example is Coldplay vs Satriani

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvB9Pj9Znsw

Satriani melody/chord progression just about identical to Coldplays smash hit off of their last album. Coldplay's up for a Grammy for it too, ouch salt on the wound. Coldplay denies it, but come on, that one is just way too close to deny. We're talking Ice Ice Baby / Under Pressure close here.

I remember being in the studio with Eugene McDaniels' and his co-producer when he cut his comeback album and she (co-producer) was telling me if you want to be a songwriter expect people to steal at least a few of your songs! Hmmmm

Anyone have any other examples?

They are certainly similar. I think it must be coincidence though. I can't imagine Coldplay knowing copying Satriani.

one problem with being a songwriter is you have to let people hear your songs before they will buy them, and yes there are actually some skunks in the music biz !!!

and people that sift thru songs can be influenced so easy and you may forget where you heard that great progression ... or you may just be a skunk

i guess it will always happen, or as some say: there's been nothing new since BACH :D
one of the most obvious cases to me has always been "Gaucho" by Steely Dan....verrrrry close to a track on Keith Jarret's "Belonging". i think Don and Walt got sued for that...

yeah, now i recall: the track is called "long as You know You're living Yours", and it's on the album "Belonging" by Keith Jarrett. exact same intro.

if it is within the bounds of 12 tone tonal harmony, yes....Bach and Mozart pretty much did every dam chord progression and melody that one can think of.

it was that damn guy Wagner that screwed it all up 8)
