Here is a tip save the bottom plate on your pedals.Use WD 40 to remove the pedal pads and /or velcro.Just spray little by little and gently lift till it is removed and then spray and wipe to get residue off and it will look good as new again.Then use dish detergent to remove the WD40 so you have a clean surface.

are you saying this will save the paint? or just remove the goo?

It saves the paint and removes the goo and makes the pedal look brand new.
