Based on the serial number, it should be socketed. As for the chip it contains, if you don't like what's currently in it, Mouser (my preference among many potential suppliers) has every type you might want to try for under a buck a piece; fast shipping, too! Good luck!

Yes, it's socketed. Off hand, I don't know what chip is in there. Whatever chip is supposed to be in there by Bjorn's ears is in there. That should be good enough, right?

I'm happy to take the back off and find out....if you can tell me what the exact sonic differences are between the chips Bjorn used in these.
