How does the Red Rooster Booster

Postby ken » Tue Feb 27, 2007 4:36 pm

Well I'll jump into the waters....I've been avoiding forums lately, and indeed buying more pedals - until I was suddenly able to get my long wanted Red Rooster Booster immediately from Musictoyz....

So I'm glad to be here!

My (gainer) setup now has been (and fairly satisfactorily since New Years) -

Tel>AM Sunface NKT25>PGC>Carb>EGDM>HBOD>Klon>Goodsell 17

Goodsell is EL84, easily set near the edge a bit....

I Keep trying to put in a SBEQ instead of the Klon, seems overly dark and a little muffled, comparatively....though quieter. The HBOD and Klon combo is awesome - without it the HBOD doesn't quite do it for me at band settings.

So now incoming is the RRB - which inspires me to write to this forum for opinions and such.....

Thinking it might replace the Carb (even the Klon? which I use only as a boost and widener for HBOD) as an earlier sparkler and pusher - maybe integrate better with the other BJFs, maybe make the SBEQ fit in.

Greatly appreciate any insign into the RRB as far as placement and replacement in pedalboard...?

Thanks!

Your post is interesting timing. I have been considering what my next BJF pedal could be, as I am down now to just the SBEQ. So I've been thinking about the RRB, like you.

I tried one a few years ago, and really liked it though I played it with a very clean sounding amp that never really pushed into overdrive very well with boosters. Now with my Rt.66 I'm thinking the RRB may be a very good match tonally, and can be the push I might be looking for.

As far as pedal order, if I had a RRB, I would be tempted to place it before the SBEQ. Sometimes I like the SBEQ pushing other pedals, but lately I like how it sits after my overdrives and boosts -- it adds muscle to the treble or bass depending on where I've got em set.

If I remember correctly, the RRB has some more low mids and top end peak compared with, say the flatter Baby Pink?

that seems right....the baby pink (like the klon) maybe gets more of the upper mids and a bit of the sparkle at top - and so sounds 'wide'....
is what I think I've heard...

your in for a treat Ken..... Ive noticed that the RRB has a very similar EQ curve to a tele bridge pup and may be the perfect booster with a Tele or P90 ---- its also similar to the Top Boost on an AC30

be sure and try it before AND after your other pedals, it has a little different effect depending on position

Not sure about this RRB yet....kinda upsets the apple cart a bit if its destined to be set for at least 11 o'clock - this is a boost with a lot of gain.

Kinda wonderin' where to put it in the chain - doesn't really replace the Klon as a boost, and what it might replace. The Carb, or even the Honeybee might be a likely candidate - could put the Klon on earlier, keep the RRB always on....Any sugestions out there?:D

Don't have the time and energy for the pedal investigation I used to...but then I have to put down a few lead tracks on a CD we're making - so maybe that'll inspire me!

Hi Ken....
how's the Red Rooster Booster workin for You in connection with the Goodsell amp? i'm talkin specially treble-wise....I use a Goodsell 33 and am thinkin these days what to get for a clean boost....i had a SHO which was too bright with the amp...i can't make up my mind between the RRB or SBEQ...the latter might help to fine-tune in certain situations, since the goodsell only got one "tone" control....but then You said it was a little too dark. well I should get both pedals i guess, hehe!

so I'm curious how RRB works for You after tryin it for a while. hope You found a good solution for Your setup..
cheers-Lars

I have had the RRB since June and up until November it was my Only dirt pedal. Alone, it definately needs to be around 11 o'clock to 1' o clock to make things fun with a tele into my Tophat Club Royale. It didn't make as much sparkle/glass as the Carb I had did, but it seemed more focused than the Carb. Now I use it in the begining of my chain to goose my EGD and HB or leave it on to make my clean sound "happen".

I also have a SBEQ that I'm still getting used to. Sometimes I like it, sometimes I don't.

hmmm...since nobody ever talks about using SBEQ as a booster for any OD, which is what i will need a booster for as well, i guess I'll go for the RRB. then again on some gigs i need a "smooth jazz" clean solo sound...and SBEQ could be perfect for that.
its really hard to decide. and they're too expensive to buy 2 of them...with 5 BJF pedals, my board is already more expensive than my amp :-)
maybe i should rely on my first impression watchin Donner's youtube demo...out of the three boosts, it was RRB that made me say "wow" immediately.

Hi Ken,
For RRB placement you might want to try the NKT>RRB, make for a nice stack. Also the RRB into HBOD would give you some nice results.
and yes a BPB would easily replace your Klon for what you are using it for,,,a clean buffered boost at the end.?. Ive always used the SBEQ>BPB at the very end of the chain with great results.
hope this may help you
