Forum Growth ??

Postby Donner » Sun Dec 23, 2007 12:11 pm

there is talk of opening up this forum to be more of a general forum .... a couple of the huge forums have gotten a little weird this year and....

What do you think ?

Do you want to keep this a BJF 'Clubhouse' type place or see if we can grow the vibe we have into something that others would dig ??

Suggestions are welcome...

(and if you see things flipping around, its me exploring what the forum structure will actually let us do  )

That's a tough one for me. I feel like I'm on somewhat similar tonal planes with regular contributors here. Its big enough to get a variety of views and opinions yet small enough to where you get to know people on some level based on their contributions and the interactions that take place here. I can, within about 90% accuracy, tell whether I'm going to like/dislike a pedal by what certain people say due to me knowing their rigs, styles, and tastes.
On the other hand, well, I have nothing really positive to say about the growth. Nothing negative per say. I don't want a snobbish club that excludes anyone but if we lose the focus of why we're here, we're just another forum. This forum, to me, is a place where appreciators of BJFE pedals gather to talk about our shared interests.

This is where I'm at also. I think this place will grow naturally as is and may someday take on a broader feel over time, but much like zion, I like the more initimate/BJF focus.

Yeah Im on both sides of that fence too....

This is nice and cozy and very useful......

and I dont know if it can be grown without losing something.....

but it would also be nice if the ToneCzar and DAM and Hermida etc people felt comfortable to have similar discussions and maintain similar Corners of the Reference section and also host and encourage some of the builder interaction that has been removed from other sites ......

hard to tell what would be beneficial.....

Sounds like other forums have come to you Donner and are asking to link up? If thats the case, we should look at why we're successful and why the other one's got out of hand. Did the other forums get weird due to uncontrolled growth? Was the focus lost? Things to consider...

also,, DocRock stated in a different thread that their was going to be a separate MP forum.... if we wanted to grow the forum, why have a separate MP site....that would be a perfect match for this forum in my book...

What is interesting is that I have 3 D*A*M pedals that I think are every bit as good as BJF stuff, but my desire to talk about them is very minimal compared to BJF stuff. Is there another pedal maker that has half as much community/passionate following as BJF? If there is, I'm unaware of who that would be. I think the combination of how great the pedals are, how great BJ and his wife are as people, plus lots of other factors, make BJF incredibly unique.

Yeah MP is actually a completely different brand with a very different dealer network, almost a different target audience... we know the BJF side so well so we see them as 'ours' too ... but as they get fully rolling there will be people buying them in stores who may never have heard of BJF (hard to fathom I know :D )

Yes and this is kind of the point - the unique quality of the items and the calibre of customers is pretty unique and at a level few others share...... do we want to share ?
