overlooked amps

Postby mopfloyd » Sun Nov 25, 2007 2:23 pm

Afternoon all,
As you can probably read into my posts I've been a BJF fan from pretty early on and have amassed a few great pedals over the years.

Now as we know, certain amps favour certain BJF's but lets face it ,with a bit of twiddling around even on a "mismatch" you will find something that you can use if you were in a pinch.

Which brings me to the point of the post....
I just went on a bit of a dig into the Mopfloyd vaults this week and came up gasping for air armed with an Orange AD15 12 combo and a very stinky old Cheese Source.
Source aside, The Orange took ALL my BJF pedals without a shudder.
Almost like the amp was made with the Prof' himself in mind.
If anyone is looking for a smallish combo to introduce to their favorite pedalboard see if you can hunt one down.
I think they discontinued them a couple of years ago,but I bet with a little digging you could easily turn one up.
No one seeme to mention these little Oranges much,so fellas have you ever had an amp that fit so well with every pedal you have? or does anyone even play one of these little juice makers?
lets talk combos....
Digging back in...

I hear a lot of people say that orange amps are pretty picky with dirt pedals, but I've found my ad30 to do very well with almost any pedal I've put in front of it. I think my orange amp is one piece of gear I would never sell.

Yeah I have wondered about thsoe little Oranges all along, but have never really gotten to mess with one...
I have some 1 12 cabs with real vintage Orange Tolex on them - does that count ??

The amp thats killing me these days is a protoype amp thats sort of an early AC30 front end (EF86) with a Matchless Clubman Power section (2 EL34s - SS Rectifier ) about 30 W ---- loves drive pedals

Nice Donner,
Do you get the feeling that everyone is right about the ef 86 tube being a little fussy?
Best to stock up on a few.
I've had really good luck with the new JJ EF806 in the Hayseed though and to be honest I really deliberated the nos route.
Anyway,at least for once, I saved a few bux.
:P

Well in this amp its great, Ive been beating on it for a few months trying to getting it to malfunction - so far so good ..... I think part of the tone problems people get with 86s are partly the soft tube rectifiers and el84s.... seems to sit real well and give some play to the fuller 34s and SS Rect...

Sorry Williamh,
Forgot to mention in the last post....
Yeah,I went on a Brit el 84 tear a few years ago and wound up with the Orange, kept, it(thank goodness) but later went with one of the last Korg Brit made ac30's for more headroom etc.
Started really gassing for an original but without the complications of too much upkeep and Rob at Valvetech helped me out.Sold my Korg to a pal to try to keep it "in the family" because it really was a good amp.
Had the 'Seed for a couple of months.Running like a charm,
but digging out the Orange was like WHOOOAAAAA.
It cant get enough BJF.
I bet that you can guess my favorites....EGDM,HB,RRB....et al

In best Graham Chapman voice(from Python)

RIGHT THATS IT! NO MORE SILLINESS.....

Donner heads up on an a pm (SYOD).There must be a way....
