Help me choose a Bearfoot drive!

Postby B15fliptop » Wed Sep 03, 2014 9:27 am

Hi,

New guy on the forum. I recently got a Mad Professor Royal Blue OD, and absolutely love it, but it's just short of being perfect for me. I love the extreme touch sensitivity, smoothness, and neutral tonal characteristics, but I would like a little more gain, and maybe a little tighter bottom.

Since BJ is clearly a genius, I would like to try another of his drives, and have been looking at the Bearfoot Model H, Dyna Red, Emerald Green, and Sparkling Yellow. Can anyone tell me which of these would be closest to the RBOD, but with the aforementioned extra gain and tighter bass (that part is less important)?

Thanks in advance for any help offered!

Sounds like the Sparkling Yellow OD 1 could be what your looking for!

Thanks for the reply!

I see that you play a Strat, do you not find the v1 too bright with single coils?

The SYODs are nice because you can really carve the mid and treble character with the provided knobs. I play a strat through a 71' deluxe reverb, and the SYOD v1 and v2 sing through the amp. The v2 has a looser feel that can come close to grungy fuzz.

The RBOD is a new design from Bjorn. Most of his designs do not offer bass adjustment. Finding an equivalent may be difficult, but I would agree that the SYODs are fairly close.

Cheers.

+1 for SYOD 1
you may try LGW as well..covers a lot of ground. the body knob is an amazing feature. lgw cleans up very well and could be used as a clean boost but..if you crank the drive goes nasty:) very good dynamics, sounds bigger than most OD pedals I have heard..

Thanks, everyone, for the helpful responses. Sounds like SYOD v1 is the way to go. Regarding the bass control on the RBOD, I always leave it at 12:00 anyway, so I don't think I'll miss it.

I might even throw the DRD in the mix. For a pedal with a fair amount of mid-range bite, the bottom-end is quite pleasing and refined ... if you are interested in those tones.

I would say DRD>HBOD and you are done with the drive section..
